Course Description

CS 764 will cover a number of advanced topics in the database systems area. Topics to be discussed include concurrency control and recovery techniques, query processing strategies for relational database systems, advanced access methods and file organizations, database operating systems, multiprocessor database machines, distributed database systems, object-oriented database systems, database system performance, data cubes, and mining. The course material will be drawn both from "classic" papers and from the recent database literature.  Clock here reading list/

Students taking 764 should be ready for some serious reading. We will cover about one to two papers per week, and students will be expected to read each of the papers before coming to the lectures. Participation in class discussions will be expected and encouraged.

Aside from reading, the course will involve midterm and final exams plus a project. The major grade determinants will be the exams and the project. The project will involve a mix of implementation and evaluation work, and you will be expected to present your project results in the form of a well-written final report.
