Cops Change Log

Tue Aug 26, 1997

John Perkins discovered that pieces of patches hadn't been moved from the patch tree into the normal image tree. He discovered that this partial update had occured for MANY of the patches that we have been applying. After John fixed the package files, I rebooted the cops nodes.

This may explain many of the bizzare problems we have been having in the recent past.

Week of 4 August, 1997

One of cops07 disk's failed. Beebs replaced it with one of the nt01 disk drives. The bad cops07 drive is sitting in front of the box, it should be sent in for warranty replacement.

Cops07 is still having problems. I returned? the ethernet card borrowed from cops11. Then I switched the disks from cops07 into the nt01 chassis. The nt01 disks are sitting next to the nt01 chassis. This seems to have fixed the problems the system was experiencing.

Two or three times in the last couple of days cops07 has apparently hung. It seems to be tied with network traffic. I've verified that the BIOS configuration is correct. To try and isolate the problem I've swapped iprb interfaces with the box designated cops11, which is really a spare at the moment. I also enabled System Management Mode.

The Past

cops01 would repeatedly hang when I ran the test program which tries to excite the Solaris TCP bug. I changed the PCI configuration to use System Management Mode, it hasn't crashed since.

I fixed the BIOS configuration on all the systems so that the Ethernet and SCSI interfaces no longer share an interrupt. The shared interrupt was causing big problems with solaris. The fix was to run the EISA configuration utility, and indicate that the VGA card wasn't using the VBI.
Note: Try restoring the default iprb configuration now that the problem may be fixed.

I reconfigured the iprb driver to use less transmit buffers. There seemed to be some contention of PCI memory traffic from the Ethernet and SCSI interfaces.

The second scsi bus on cops11 has apparently failed. I've swapped disks with nt02 so we can keep going. The cops11 mainframe has both nt and solaris boot disks which boot it as nt02. I cannot make it fail with the diagnostics, but after booting solaris and accessing disks on the 2nd bus, it hangs. I believe there is no problem with the 1st bus.
