Song #3 - Stout and Alba
MP3 Here 4.4 Mb Download

This one was inspired by my two cats. They totally have the right outlook on life, IMHO. There are days I wish I could swap places with them, so that's what this is.

It was done in literally 1 take, so it's very sloppy, but I'm really tired. I'll redo it later and actually put effort into it. (though the slop lends a kind of flavor of its own)

(yes I kinda ripped off the Stray Cats. I apologize!)

Stout and Alba

Little black fur
Swish tail so light
No need to work
No need to fight
If you get dinner
Everything’s all right
It’s all right tonight

(chorus)
It’s all right tonight
No dogs in sight tonight
No need to hurry
No need to shout
Cause it’s all right tonight

Little striped fur
Huddled on the ground
Grab a red dot
And chase it around
Sleeping in a lap
A stress-less mound
It’s all right tonight

Two little cats
With a life so rough
Sleepin’ all day
Then jumpin’ on stuff
Not worried at all
If they have enough
It’s all right tonight

true the strays used a similar chord progression, but so have a dozen other blues and rockabilly acts. feel no shame. [1.] maybe the chorus should go something like "no need to hurry, no need to fight" (or "no need for fright" or something that rhymes with "tonight"?) [2.] i feel like it needs a bridge after the second chorus. of course, i always feels like there needs to be a bridge... ;)

I agree on both accounts. I wrote the chorus just before I recorded it, and since I did 1 take (pretty much BSing it) I can't really claim it to be perfect. Now that I look at after a couple hours of sleep, it should fit with the "ight" sound.

I tried like the devil to come up with something else, since I felt it was too short, but I couldn't come up with anything, except the chorus I tacked on. I can come up with music for a bridge (It's in A, so no problem.. :) ) but I'm not sure how my brain is doing a day later as far as words.

If you come up with anything (since you have met the cats in question) feel free and I'll see if I can work it in.

P.S No need for fright or No need for flight.. what's your vote.

does the bridge have to have words? can you go "meow meow" or "purr" and it not be too cheesy? one of *my* goals for this month is trying to throw "oohs" and "aahs" and "bop-ba-das" into the songs i'm writing. i used to never do that because i thought it was stupid, but it dawned on me that some of my favorite songs do. so maybe they're worth something after all (as long as they go to a good melody)!!

I had thought of getting Stout to purr and then recording that. I had also thought of just recording a speaking line saying "No Stout, Headphones aren't for chewing... Good kitten, That's right, go chew on that plastic ring..." Etc.. since that is the most common comments heard in our house. If I actually end up recording this for more than giggles, there will be a lot more instruments.. I.E. Drum, Bass, Lead, etc.. and I plan on doing some nice little blues-rockabilly solos.

I might just make the bridge a breakdown, with the sounds of the cat's purring over top, with a meow at the end before diving back into the last verse.

It's just silly and fun so why not.

yeah, a breakdown with purring and sound-bytes would be cute. might be a little silly, but it's a fun song!

I can't really relate to this song because I am allergic to cats. I like the no need for fright line the best.
