Song #13 Success
MP3 Download Here!

I worked all day at Microsoft...I might be their new mail clerk...before you rag on me...let me just say I have NEGATIVE cash flow in my bank account right now. Yeah, so anyway, I'm tired. But I was excited to get home and work on new songs. I have a goal of getting my 14 songs done tonight...so with that in mind I penned this tune called "Success" in anticipation of this little victory. I was like "what is success?" what does that mean to me? what would it mean to my personal life. I just read this Ryan Adams biography and he says pretty much the same thing that every rock star says about it - it SUCKS (well, parts of it anyway)...and how hard it is to be in the spotlight all the time. I got a little taste of what that was like in Alaska and even on a small scale it's not like the funnest thing in the world. Anyway...this is sort of some ramblings about that....here comes song #14.

Success
Words/Music by Matt Hopper

Baby here comes success
I can smell it on your breath
Youíll have to meet me at the tracks
Cause Iím not looking back

I donít wish this curse on anyone
An alcoholic summer is my protocol
But I still canít escape from blackened lungs
And veering eyes and column widths

I need to get back to my hometown before I burst into flames
Thereís a need for some for some loving from your old friends and someone smiling at you

Baby here comes the mess
A stack of letters [couple] phone calls from your latest ex
It may seem a little late but can I book a flight on the red eye?

this is a good one, too. these last two might be the best you've put out in FAWM... perhaps you should keep going? we'll catch up sooner or later. ;)

Burr, I really feel like FAWM has made me grow as a songwriter. That, in and of itself, is a success. Just the fact that I'm kicking out so much jams, I am finding new ways of singing melodies to keep myself entertained. It's helping me grow in all aspects of songwriting. I'm gonna keep going...don't you worry. I hate to say it outloud but I really want to hit 28 this month.

Yeah Man. This song sounds good mellow as it is. Maybe some piano. You do a good job of conveying your longing for home. I feel your pain:)

Dan, good to have your comments (Everyone else - DAN IS A PHENOMENAL SONGWRITER)...the funny part is I don't miss home at all. I just figured it would be a good song for those people who DO miss home...and I meant it as a more allegorical reference to familiarity more than anything (being in touch with something grounded - not all the falseness that comes with success)...but hey, what the hell...take from it what you want. And Dan, I'd love for you to add some of your rocking piano parts to the song!
