20 February 2004 (Friday)
from now on i'm going in order. #8-11 coming right up.
there were little candy hearts in the office last week, and at one point i looked through them (touching almost all of them) for a good message. i put one my pocket hoping it would get all dirty and then i could give it to somebody and have a good laugh. the idea of a nasty little candy heart in somebody's pocket sounded like song material...
this is mostly blues in E, but i don't actually play any blues songs, so i have no patterns to fall into. and i added a few departures from format to avoid the monotony demons.
i'd record it tonight, but i've got a gig at the marlin...
(tiny fairbanks details... there's a dark little bar near campus called THE MARLIN, and the great local band SWEATING HONEY played there feb. 14, and i did indeed have a nice dance...)
Nasty little heart
let me tell you about my fairbanks february fourteen
we been pretty freakin cold since before halloween
come the holiday of love, we's all hopin for some heat
warmin up our little hearts not just our frostbitten feet
On the way
down to the river
found myself
sharing a path with her
we's walkin' like two ducks down a icy winter road
she got her hands in tattered pockets cuz the wind's so cold
she's rummaging around in there all kinds of different ways
till she finds a nasty little candy heart that's been there a couple days
nasty little heart covered with dirt and hair and string
nasty little heart wonder where you got that thing
that's the nastifunkest little heart i ever did see
please give your nasty little heart to me
it's been so long since last summer, it's been so long since the sun
think i've had the longest winter ever,
i think maybe nasty little hearts have more fun
she warn't worried she was givin gifts all covered in dirt
she wiped it off and left a smudgie on the front of her shirt
dusty words sayin BE MINE, gritty taste of peppermint
warm fuzzy feelin of that deep-pocket lint
On the way
down the road
found myself
sharing a heart with her
so let me tell you how that february fourteen ends up
i got some fair trade shade grown coffee, pour my thermos in her cup
and there's honey at the marlin at the end of the day
so we come in from the cold and dirty dance the night away
nasty little heart, might leave some folk grodified
nasty little outer shell, sweet and tasty inside
you got the funkinastest little heart i ever did see
honey give your nasty little heart to me
