numero 4 - we all reinvent the wheel .wma file here
i like the way this song is working out, but you might not be able to hear it since i'm still having trouble with "mp3s" and "software". maybe you can play the windows media audio file till i get smarter. i think i'd like to make it a duet... make the overlapping lines into a bit of a dialogue... i didn't practice the higher vocal till i recorded it, so that was a stretch.
i'll probably refine a lot of the lyrics and the structure, as they just kinda grew out haphazardly while i sang the repeated line over and over and over. i have in mind the balance between "you don't need to reinvent the wheel" and "you only learn by trying (and seeing what works)". seen through the eyes of two people goin' down them same hard roads that we all gotta go down. shucks.

Song #7: Heavy D
Download MP3 Here!
I was messing around last night with this weird chord and this sort of stumbled out of my mouth. It's really just one of those fun songs with lots of delay...I might rework it later on...perhaps a total overhaul...but I do like parts of it...it's sort of got a Wilco "Being There" vibe.
I won't even tell you what it's about...guesses anyone? More...

Song #6: Girdwood, Alaska
Download MP3 Here!
This is sort of nostalgic song written with Valentine's Day in mind (it's right around the corner, boys, I hope you're making her something)...said girl is no longer my Girlfriend, but she is my girl friend and I still care about her alot despite us going our seperate ways. So yes, this is sort of a personal "Pinkerton" song for me. Lot's o' inside jokes and just insider stuff in general in it, it's a trip down memory lane for me....man oh man.
I think my favorite line and the one that sums up our relationship is "I'm in love with you but I know the timing's off"...and I like all the stuff about Stevie Nicks - my favorite.
I met this guy Marc Broussard last night...ever heard of him? He just toured with Maroon 5 and he's recording his new record here...the song he played me sounded sweet! More...

Song #2: Kentucky Blue
MP3 Demo - Download Here (2.6mb)
I wrote and recorded this all today. Probably my fastest writing/demo turnound ever. It's inspired by a news story I read about a pickup truck flooded into a drainage ditch just north of Louisville, KY. After the wreck, the driver still got out and tried to walk on, but ultimately drown. They found his body the next day. I dunno... the words & melody just came to me, and I figured out the chords when I got home.
I threw an impromptu mandolin part into the demo (being called "Kentucky Blue" and all), and since I didn't rehearse it or anything please forgive the couple of sour notes. Also forgive the scratchy voice, as it's still not totally recovered from being sick. The song is less than 3 minutes... and I almost feel like it should be longer. But I don't know what a third verse could be about. Maybe a longer solo? Any suggestions? More...

Song #1 Wanderlost (?)
#1 Wanderlust - MP3
Ok, I have been extremely busy with work and stuff, but I cranked this out. I'm not particularly happy with it, but it is at least better than nothing.
It was originally patterened after old sea shanty/folk song type songs... sort of the melancholy wandering song, but as is usual with my stuff it didn't quite fit that and ended up being depressing, so I apologize. It's kinda derivative and I'm not sure if I would keep it beyond February, but the point of FAWM is to write and not critique, so here it is anyway.
I have had a total of 3 hours to record so far this month and 2 of those were spent trying to figure out why I had a nasty hum in my system (pickup+Room Light Fader+UPS on PC=Nasty), so I finally gave up trying to do it as a completely live take and just recorded the guitar part at about midnight last night. I will slap the vocals on tonight and upload it.
The song is actually about my job, if you can believe it, but it goes for anytime you're life is lost and you're not sure where you should be. More...

Song #1: No for an Answer
MP3 Demo - Download (3.3mb)
I finished writing this yesterday, and since my voice has 90% recovered from laryngitis I'll try to demo and post it tonight. It's actually a leftover from when I was trying to write a concept ablum a few years ago. I wrote the first verse and basic chord progression then, and just yesterday wrote the second verse and bridge/out-tro. Part of the reason I never finished it was that I don't really feel this way anymore; it's a bit more angsty than the place I'm at right now. But I think we all know what this kind of stubborn spiritual face-off can be like.
Disclaimer: This demo's a bit more hi-fi that most of mine will be... I just had some spare time to map out a drum pattern using some loops back when my voice was out of commission. Figured I could still be doing something while mute. More...

Song #5: Poor Madeline
NOTE: C'mon guys, it's almost February 3rd and no one is posting anything, what's going on?

This one's pretty sloppy...and I copped a run from Elliot Smith (R.I.P.) but I don't think it's a rip for the most part...but let me know what you think. Would love some feedback. This one has a little Brian Hall flavor to it I think...and maybe a little Paul Kelly influence. More...

Song #4: Bombs Away
Click Here to download MP3 demo here
This is one of those old songs that's been sitting around for awhile that I never finished. I'm just curious to hear opinions on it. I like playing it with a loud, obnoxious band that rocks out. I think we played it with a version of the Candles once at Russian Jack Springs but I never finished it and we never played it again. The song is about being cool, even when everyday life tries to get you down. It's about having fun and laughing in the face of your problems. More...

numero 1 - dusty boxes - .wma file here
i'm submitting this so that FAWM seems slightly less like matthopper.com
this is definitely a song that wouldn't've seen completion were it not for FAWM...
the crucial last line is missing. written between 10 and midnight last night.
i'll comment more later...

(LATER)
well, i haven't grown to love this song, but if this turns out to be the worst of my fawm collection, i'll be pleased. i wrote all the words before thinking of a melody, which is something i rarely do. i sat down at a coffeehouse and tried to think of something appropriate for the first song of the project. i was doing some preemptive thinking, realizing how i'm really glad to have some of the things that i've forced myself to write in the past. some of them evoke memories and images more strongly than anything else can. and then i personified that into a girl, as i usually do. thought about somebody come and gone, and people scrounging around for the tiniest shred to remember her by. a tiny bit of that came out in the words. Song #3: Skipping Winter
Click here to download an MP3 demo of this song
This song is called Skipping Winter because it's about me being in Santa Monica and my friends and family being up Alaska were it's really cold! Santa Monica is nice and sunny every day. It's amazing. I think it's rained once in the month since I've been here...and even that was at night and only for a short time.
This song is sort of a meandering one...lazy and melancholy. The only part I'm not too sure about is the "Ok, I miss you part"...it's pretty sloppy...and I sort of thought maybe I could do an Eddie Vedder thing there but you know, some things are best left to Eddie Vedder. Ha!
I need job! All I do is check my e-mail, eat, and play guitar all day. More...

Song #2: S.O.S.
DOWNLOAD MP3 DEMO NOW - CLICK HERE!
I was jamming on the fingerpicking part of this song and figured out some chords that would fit underneath and just started singing about being out on a ship. After I sat down to work on the lyrics I decided a nice chorus would be to talk about not giving up even when it seems like things aren't gonna get better. It's something I think we've all experienced in some way or another - in other words, it's a pretty general theme to write about. I took the three verses and described three different situations where one might feel like giving up or getting out - and then the chorus is basically a big rally to school your problems. I know the fingerpicking is reminiscent of Sunday Bloody Sunday a little, and I know I'm singing Bright Eyes style but it seemed to fit the somewhat bleak verses to sing in that desperate voice. I also know that the bridge sucks ass, I'm aware of that...I was just jamming it out and haven't really given much thought to that part. I'm also gonna mess around with the arrangement a little...I dunno...it's a long song and some parts I think could be better orchastrated...ideas? More...
