Song #14: Trilogy Part 3 (In Your Wrists)
MP3 Demo Here (3.1mb)

And this is the last one! Probably the weakest of the three, unfortunately (I actually like the chorus, but the verses suck... but hey, it was FAWMed). Note also that I make reference to different disciples in each of the songs, but I'm still very much talking about myself here... I'm just relating to said disciple, guess. Whatever. I'll maybe elaborate on my thinking later, but I'm out the door to see Single Frame play tonight... More...

Song #13: Trilogy Part 2 (Answers)
MP3 Demo Here (5.2mb)

This is the second trilogy installment. Note that each of the three songs roughly represents three stages in the Passion story. The last one is the crucifixion, the next one is the ressurection, and this one is that awkward time in between. I blatantly lifted a lyric from the Vigilantes of Love here, but it was too perfect. I'd like to hear this with a piano and really reverby guitars in the background. More...

Song #12: Trilogy Part 1 (All My Sins)
MP3 Demo Here (2.8mb)

So I wrote a trilogy for my last 3. originally it was going to be a sci-fi trilogy. I'll still probably do that... but a series of circumstances this week really made me focus on the story of the Passion of Christ (not just the movie... though I did see that last night). These songs were half written last night and half this morning. Half recorded this afternoon, and the other half just now. You'll probably recognize the tune from this one... I didn't like the original lyrics, but still to co-opted some of them (funny, considering the message is almost the opposite). More...

Song #21 It's A Good Day For Some Attitude
Download MP3 Here!

I imagine this song of course really rocking and maybe a little faster than the demo came out. Full band. The lead guitar is sloppy, but you can get the idea. Should I call this what I called it or "Swimming with Sharks"? More...

Song #11 Count
MP3 Here 4.7Mb Download

I was reminiscing on my old band and how much has changed since the band dissolved, in preparation for writing an "ending" song. It struck me that I was getting old and that we like to think we have control over our future, but in reality all we can really do is react as events happen.

So call it maudlin, morose, introspective, or whatever, this is me feeling my age, and I'm still young.

(I was trying to add a solo part, but my PC freaked on me. In the process I almost lost the whole thing. I had to realign the different parts in the editor and I decided to mix it and post it before I wrecked something else. So I know it is missing a lead line, but it'll have to wait till March. *shrug*) More...

Song #10 Calvin and Hobbes
MP3 Here 2.1Mb download

Here is my Tribute song, about a week late. Sorry about that. (at least I finished one)

This a tribute to my favorite comic strip - Calvin and Hobbes and so indirectly to Bill Watterson. The verses were mostly written from specific comic strips I have in one of the big Calvin and Hobbes collections and the chorus is about "Calvinball".

It's short and really poppy. More...

numero 13 - F WMA file here
7 couplets does not a sonnet make.

the only reason i did this was because i like the first couplet (which is also the last). i thought i'd just fill in 5 other reasonable couplets and record the thing, but it got out of hand. oh well. More...

numero 11 - gold WMA file here
gold is a pretty tired alaska topic, and i didn't really grab it and shake it up, either, although i meant to do so. still, i like some of them classic gold rush tunes that get tossed around for the tourists. and does my bio mention that i like robert service, the bard of the north?

my original intention was to alternate the verses of this song with something much rockiner,
but i ran out of time...

climate change... how i learned to love the bomb... etc. More...

Song #20 Black Anniversary
Download MP3 Here!

Ok, this one is really bare...I started messing around and came up with a skeleton I want to use down the line...but I had to go to the Autumns show (awesome band -read my show review) and so I quickly recorded some "ideas". When I came home I listened to it and it sounded cool, so I figured I'd post it. I'm gonna be finishing my ideas later on with this one. I know a few things...it's gonna be about the anniversary of a death. There are no real lyrics for it yet, just an idea.

Song Theme Challenge: The End
Ok, here is a theme challenge idea...

Write a song about an ending. As we are drawing to a close of FAWM, I'm already missing the daily spark to sit down and write, knowing someone is going to listen and make a comment. How nice it has been. This doesn't have to be the END of our productivity, but I'll fondly remember this month and the songs I wrote during this time. I challenge you all to write a song about an ending in your life...whatever as long as it is an ending...then maybe we could write a song about a beginning?

Song #19 Give Way to the Moon
Download MP3 Here!

All this Pedro talk...all these Pedro riffs. Maybe I'll move to San Pedro. Maybe I could stay there, never say goodbye. Live on the beach. Write songs. Drink Pina Coladas. Eat Coconuts. Surf. Sleep. Play chess. Read books. Enjoy it with someone special. More...

Song# 9 Main Event
MP3 Here 3.5Mb Download

This one was inspired by the incessant coverage of politics, since it is "an election year".

I don't write in drop D all that often and it shows. It kinda took on a Pedro meets Starflyer 59 meets some other emo feel to me.

Both this song and the last song are song down in a more comfortable range for me. (sinus infection...*shrug*)

This one needs some work, but it's one more notch on the belt, so on we go. More...

Song#8 Endup
MP3 Here 2.7Mb Download

I could tell you guys a heck of a boring story why I haven't been cranking out more stuff, but I'll spare you the details, since I have more than surpassed my quota of complaining during this project.

Anyway, I'm back, but for one reason or another I don't have a tribute song. I tried, but the closest I got was a verse and a half about Calvin and Hobbes, that was really hard to make work. I'll still try and do it to get the tribute song done, but I know I've completely screwed the deadline. I can only appeal and say "extenuating circumstances" and throw myself on the mercy of the court.

This song is based of a chord progression I came up with 4 years ago and promptly shelved because it was too poppy/simple. I was playing to vent some frustration and soothe myself a bit and I slipped into it. The lyrics flowed, initially, from the decisions I am caught in between at the moment, and have been all month.

I for the longest time couldn't come up with any more verses, so the third was kinda FAWMed in there. Any suggestions would be appreciated More...

numero 10 - the radius WMA file here
when i finished #9 on monday morning, that was the end of all my big fragments. i had a list of titles/ideas, but few words and no music. so... the last >4 are from scratch.

here's the first offering, which was only a title/idea as of late february 24. it's a bit of an alan turing, as the idea is much bigger than my 2-hour abilities...

but i thought i'd give it a shot.

there are some very rough spots on the demo... gotta love 'em.

after a day of meditation...
my fave bit is mostly stolen from others: "maybe we're perfect now" is more or less GOOD WILL HUNTING and "each thing in its place is best" is word-for-word ripped off from a longfellow poem.

Song #18 Ping Pong
Download MP3 Here!

Well, first off, I didn't expect to write a song like this tonight...it kind of came as a shock to me. I suppose it sums up some of my beliefs in a pretty straitforward manner...the title Ping Pong refers to the endless debate religious scholars have for their own opinions on what is truth and what it is that they believe. This song touches on the lack of tolerance people of different religions have for one another...I guess this song is meant to be a little provacative...I state a belief that I have that we don't really know what happens after death until we become one again with the earth. I make a statement that hints at with freedom comes ignorance...and I believe this to be true. We live in a world that will always have war and hurt and anger and misery and pain...but with those things come some of life's most beautiful, precious, uplifitng and satisfying moments...I believe in darkness and in light...yin/yang...good/bad...balance is probably the only thing I adhere to in terms of "rules" placed upon myself...I believe everything that happens to us in life has a reaction...and can be viewed as good or bad depending on how you choose to look at the situation. I've told people this before but I don't regret anything I've ever done in my life. I believe every action I've taken has gotten me to where I am today and I'm thankful for that alone. On a lighter, less philosphical note, I thought it was funny that I put "simple plan" in the song because they were on Conan OBrien as I wrote the song. This song may have came about as a subconscious statement to the hoopla surrounding the release of "The Passion" - the new movie portraying the last moments of Jesus Christ's life before his crucifiction. Anyway, I'll probably be back to lovely little pop ditties again tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy this bare bones, sloppy demo... More...

Song #11: Mick, Me China
MP3 Demo - Download Here (3.2mb)

I wrote this one today at work as a bit of a break. I first learned about "cockney rhyming slang" when I was traveling in England last fall and visited with my cousin Kristen who's working as a vet there. She says she'll get calls from farmers saying, "Well, that new calf turned up brown" and she'll say, "Huh? Brown? But I thought she was white!" and the farmer will say, "No, no... brown! Y'know, brown... bread... dead!!"

I also just recently finished reading The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson, which is a fun and irreverent history of the English Language (and includes a fabulous chapter on wordplay). If you've seen the re-make of "Ocean's Eleven" there's a few jokes about the slang in there, too. Natalie and I occasionally try to dabble in it and create our own personal vocabulary of rhyming slang, but it's really quite hard.

I think I might try to write a "wordplay EP" combining this with "Captain Anagram" and other songs about Holorhymes, Puns, etc. In fact, I'd like to make a whole series of "schoolhouse rock" kinds of albums for more advanced topics. Oh, and I apologize in advance for the poor cockney accent in this recording. I sound Australian. It's just a demo. More...

numero 9 - spit shine WMA file here
again... a bit rushed. i like some of this, but it's far from ripe.
not a goofy song, anyway... or not meant to be... a bit amorphous right now.

this is the third song i recorded between 10 pm and 5 am this morning,
and i was not being very particular with arrangements. time may change these... More...

numero 8 - jennifer ... WMA file here
(or "jenny" or "jealous again"...)

burr totally beat me to the drunken bar song, and then to the hasty tribute song to movie jennifer. of course, our jennifers differ in several ways... i had much higher hopes. not even good enough to be called a weird al ripoff.

the haste of the fawm is bringing out the goofy songs in me. usually i write down lots of titles, a majority of them are silly, but most of the silly ones never get written. i've been recording a album-like thing lately collected from the last 4 years of songwriting, and most of the songs are dead-serious.

Song #16 The Desert Loses Touch
Download MP3 Here!I woke up feeling a little under the weather and after awhile I made the decision to go back to bed, I'm sick. After watching "Lost In Translation" and catching a little shut eye I felt the urge to write. You see, it's been raining HARD here in California for the past two days. Last night we went out for a friends birthday and it was just pouring rain on us. So it starts out pretty autobiographical...then I try to lend some sort of meaning in the chorus. I don't think this is my best song or even if I want to sing so high on the chorus (i'm wondering if I could nail it if I wasn't sick?) but give me your thoughts... More...
