CS310 Grades

GRADING: There are several components to each student's grade in CS310. Each component is worth a certain percentage of the student's overall final percentage in the course. The final percentage is calculated by weighing each student's percentage in each component by the following percentages:

Students in CS310 tend to perform at or near the standard grade percentages, so there is usually not much need for a curve in CS310. However, letter grades are assigned so that students with very similar percentages (i.e. 79.94 and 80.02) are awarded the same letter grade. I do this by using the largest gaps in the rank order of percentages as my cutoff points instead of strictly sticking to any predetermined grade cutoff range. Lately, the class average has been between 80 and 85% and I use these percentages as my starting point for each letter grade range.
