In Class Lab Exercise
  1. LOGIN - If you already have a CS account, just log in as you normally would. Otherwise, perform the following steps.
    1. Enter Control-Alt-Delete, i.e. press the key labeled Ctrl, the key labeled Alt and the key labeled Delete at the same time. A login panel will appear on the screen.
    2. Using your mouse press the "newuser" button on the login panel.
    3. Follow the directions which appear on the screen.
  2. USING NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR
    1. Start Netscape Navigator (Start->Programs->NetscapeNavigator->Netscape Navigator).

      If you are a new user, Netscape Navigator will start you out at the Computer Sciences Department home page. You can always get back to this page by pressing the "Home" button in the Netscape Navigator window with your mouse.

    2. Go to the CS302 home page. Enter the URL (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~cs302/cs302.html) in the space after the word "Location" at the top of your Netscape Navigator window.
    3. Bookmark this page (Bookmarks->Add Bookmark).
    4. Go to the section homepage for this class. Click on the link "Lecture 1 & 2 Discussions" on the CS302 home page. On the next page, find your section number and click on it. Bookmark this page as well.
    5. Press the "Back" arrow at the top left hand corner of the Netscape Navigator window as many times as necessary to get back to the CS302 home page.
    6. Go to the lecture homepage for this class. Click on the link "All Lectures" on the CS302 home page. On the next page, find your lecture number and click on it. Bookmark this page as well.
    Note: You have used three different ways to navigate the internet. First, you typed in the URL. Second, you followed the links on various pages to get to your section homepage. Third, you used Netscape Navigator's "Back" arrow to move back to webpages you had accessed previously. Feel free to experiment to find other ways to move around the internet.
  3. STARTING JAVA WORKSHOP
    1. Using Netscape Navigator take a look at the instructions for Program 0. The link to the Program 0 instructions is on the lecture homepage.
    2. Do Step 1 (Start with opening the Java Workshop environment) now.
    3. IMMEDIATELY after this step, close Java Workshop (File->Exit) and reopen it in the same way as before (This step updates your version of Java Workshop to the most current).
  4. HANDING IN YOUR PROGRAM
    1. Take a look at Step 7 of the instructions for Program 0 (Turning in the program). Even though you have nothing to hand in yet run through the steps to make sure you understand how to hand in your assignments.
  5. LOGGING OUT - Don't leave any of the CS labs without making sure that you have logged out!
    1. Close your applications (File->Exit)
    2. Log out (Start->Shut Down and then press the Enter key)
    3. Wait until your computer is logged out before you leave the lab.
