Homework Assignments
- Homework #7 (Due: Tuesday, 26 April, 10:00)
Produce a documentary video of about 10 minutes in length (absolutely no longer than 15 minutes)
on a subject that has some component related to science and engineering in Italy today.
There must be interviews
included, and there must be Italians included in some interviews at least.
Include Italians in other parts of the film as well if you can.
There will be three teams of students, resulting in three documentary videos.
Researching your topic will be an important phase that was not part
of your first documentary project.
- Some possible topics for the subject of your documentary include:
- The changing textile and apparel industry in Florence as a result of recent international trade
agreements (see, for example, Rosita for ideas on this topic since she used to work in the
textile industry)
- The effects of a new high-speed railroad line being constructed near Florence (see, for
example, Mario who led the walk up Monte Morello for comments on its impact on
archaeological sites, and the exhibit at the Palazzo Vecchio)
- Challenges in restoration of art, architecture, or gardens in Florence
(e.g., recent architectural restoration at the Villa il Paradisino,
which is nearby and has an owner who speaks English and knows Jason)
- Italian cars, motorcycles, parking, and traffic
- Health sciences, smoking by teens, drugs (possibly interview someone at Lilly or GE in Sesto)
- The science and engineering of making gelato
- The science and engineering of making Ginori porcelain (interview people at the Ginori factory in Sesto)
- Science and engineering in Italian fashion
- Teams
- Team 1: Myssi, Kristin, Jason, Stacy
- Team 2: Katie, Amanda, Linda, Josh S
- Team 3: Angela, Rachel, Josh K
- Milestones and Intermediate Due Dates

- Tuesday, 29 March: Topic and main ideas/goals defined (hand in 1 page writeup)
- Tuesday, 5 April: Research done (hand in 1-2 page summary of research completed)
- Tuesday, 12 April: Shooting sessions done (hand in 1-2 page writeup summarizing work done)
- Thursday, 14 April: Preliminary draft of documentary (present and discuss in class)
- Thursday, 21 April: Final documentary completed (show in class and hand in 3-4 page
paper describing your project)
- Homework #6 (Due: Thursday, 17 March)
Construct using only a straightedge and compass (use a piece of string or the compass that
is in the course reserve area of the library) the drawings 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4,
5.1 c-f, and 5.3 a-b in the book by R. Lawlor,
Sacred Geometry, with the necessary pages on the course
Reserve List.
You need only show the final figure for each separate construction, not all of the
intermediate figures, but include
the intermediate lines and curves (drawn lightly); highlight the lines that comprise
the final figures constructed.
- Homework #5 (Due: Thursday, 3 March)
Your finished first documentary, which will be shown and discussed in class on March 3.
Your video should be about 5 minutes long (and absolutely no longer than 10 minutes),
be centered on a subject in the villa or
in Sesto Fiorentino, and include some components that involve Italians. Also
a portion should include an interview segment with someone.
- Teams
- Team 1: Katie, Angela, Jason, Linda, and Josh S.
- Team 2: Amanda, Josh K., Myssi, Kristin, Rachel, and Stacy
- Homework #4 (Due: Thursday, 17 February)
Each of the two teams should write a rough draft script that contains two columns.
The first column describes video shots and sequences, and the second column
describes corresponding audio pieces for the video in the same row of the table.
Include all the main shots and sequences
that you can as of now. Your audio section can include voice-overs and dialog,
plus key background music or sounds. Keep in mind to write dialog the way you talk.
For a sample, see Chicago Media Works
- Homework #3 (Due: Thursday, 10 February)
Each of the two teams should write an approximately 2-page, typewritten proposal that describes the team's
subject of their documentary video. Each paper should address the 6 points given on page 122
(which is page 3 of the pdf file) of the reading "Directing the Documentary."
Include a 1-2 sentence statement at the beginning which clearly and concisely states
the basic idea in your story. Include a cover page that gives a tentative title,
your team name, and a list of the individuals on your team.
