The book should really be entitled 'Introduction to Couchbase' as it really didn't touch any development or operational aspects of Couchbase. The online docs are much, much better.

Developing with Couchbase Sever by MC Brown is punch packed in minimum number of pages (88 only). It introduces to Couchbase and then takes you to fast pace tour of developing application using Couchbase.

The book looks into the basics of the Couchbase Server data store, the details of storing and using data, API and operations available, and a quick overview of the different client libraries available for building applications. The libraries are available in Java. .Net, Ruby, Python, PHP, and C.

Brown explains how to use and choose libraries and develop a web application.

This book is good start for any one looking to learn Couchbase.

This is a horribly written book. Poorly edited and not worthy of the O'Reilly name. This book is not worth your time.

I rate a computer book based on the value it brings to me. Does it help clarify the subject over what I can get elsewhere, or does it give me a gem of insight that adds value to my career.

Here is what you get in this book.

9 pages of what Couchbase is. Largely taken from online, but nicely summarized.
10 pages of how to set up Couchbase. The first few are an absolute waste, as the install is through a wizard. Also nothing you can't find online.
6 pages on database design with JSON, which could be useful for someone not familiar.
11 pages on CRUD in Couchbase. This may be the best portion of the book, especially for those unfamiliar with concurrency concepts in a key/value (NoSQL) type of database structure.
A bit more than 4 pages of PHP "recipes", which are largely useless to anyone who is not familiar with PHP.
21 pages on views and queries. This is the primary reason I bought the book and it is thin, at best.
2 pages with resources to help you further

The meat of the book is in the views and queries. This area is good on theory, but falls short on practice. If I did not understand map functions already, the text would be hard to follow, as it does not break the query down any further than the online documentation. And, since I do understand map and reduce, the information is extremely thin.

I actually wanted to review the book with 1 star, because it offered no value to me, but felt that was unfair as I had specific needs in mind. I then went back and thought about what a newbie user to Couchbase might get out of it and did a quick comparison to the online documentation.

In short: If you like holding books to learn, then this is an okay introduction to Couchbase. If you are programming in PHP, you will find it even more valuable, as many of the examples focus on PHP. If you want to learn Couchbase, then I would recommend saving your money and using the online documentation.

I like it this book because there are few current books on Couchbase Server and it provides good information. Sadly for me, it doesn't cover developing for the C API, which is a bit different that for the other languages due to the asynchronous callback API, which isn't really mentioned here. But there is a lot of good, well-presented information on the overall subject, and a bit more for specific other languages.
