Navicat is one of the best IDE database tools available in the market. "MySQL Management and Administration with Navicat" enables you to explore the tool's rich capabilities on MySQL.

The book, seemingly brief, having only 105 pages, shows you step-by-step, how to build data model, create and maintain data, administer your MySQL database, write queries against the database, and develop reports from the data.

Right from the first chapter, you will eagerly look forward to continuing to the next; and highly likely you will only stop when you finish the very last page of the appendix.

Regardless you are a database administrator, designer or application developer; new or familiar to MySQL, if you have used or are deciding to use Navicat, you will find this book a priceless hands-on tutor.

A truly recommended professional book !

MySQL Management and Administration with Navicat
Gokhan Ozar
Packt Publishing
134 pages (e book)

Navicat for MySQL has been around for over ten years and allows graphical database management and development do be performed on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Pact Publishing now has book out for those wishing to master this tool. The book is divided into six chapters and starts with the basics of installation and access over SSL. Please note that there is also a Navicat premium tool that allows a database administrator to work with MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, Oracle, and PostgreSQL databases within a single application.

The second chapter goes covers creating databases, tables, defining foreign keys, and triggers. Entering data into tables, using Navicat as a query tool, and view creation is also covered. The format is that of a cookbook and walks the read the steps needed to illustrate the functionality of Navicat. The test is clear, well written, easy to follow for even novices. However this does not explain much of the underlying MySQL features such as how functions like triggers work and that is probably best left to an intensive book on MySQL.

The third chapter plunges into data management such as importing data, exporting data, and backups. The forth chapter is devoted to data modeling. Navicat's data modeling has some features not found in MySQL Workbench such as object history tracking. Also the feature to annotate with images and notes is a useful feature.

Chapter five is user and privilege management and table maintenance. The use of a GUI for user management over messy SQL statements and long been advocated by myself and others.
