This picture was taken from the Hoher Markt, the oldest square in Vienna. The statue in the middle of the square, shown here, is called the Nuptial Fountain and was built by an Emperor after his son returned safely from a siege. Below the ground of the square, there are some excavated remains of an old Roman garrison. They are pretty neat to see. A door into the Altes Rathaus, or the old town hall. An entrance into the Bohemian Court Chancery. This palace was built by the Habsburg rulers as a place to govern Bohemia, since they were also kings of Bohemia. Above the entrance into the Bohemian Court Chancery. Even further above the entrance into the Bohemian Court Chancery.
Another Entrance of the Bohemian Court Chancery. This monument to the Jewish victims of the holocaust sits in Judenplatz, the site of the Jewish ghetto in medieval times. This statue of the writer Lessing also stands in Judenplatz. It was destroyed by the Nazis during WWII because of the writer's desire for tolerance towards Jews and was later rebuilt by the original artist. A fountain to the left of the entrance to the Academy of Sciences, a part of the old university. A fountain to the right of the entrance to the Academy of Sciences.
The top of the Academy of Sciences. The bottom of the Academy of Sciences. Notice the two fountains.
