Stephansdom Cathedral

Here are some pictures of Stephansdom Cathedral. Stephansdom is not only the physical center of Vienna but also appears to be it's emotional heart. It has existed in one form another since the 13th century. The extended life of this church has led to a mix of architectural styles: roman, gothic, and baroque. And, really, it is just plain beautiful. Please forgive the poor quality of many of these images. The inside of the cathedral is very dark and even with the flash, there often wasn't enough light to get a good image.
Captions are given below each photo and you can click on a thumbnail to get a larger view of each picture.
Looking towards the front of the church from the entrance. Another picture from just inside the main entrance. One of the many murals painted on the walls and pillars of the church. The altar at the front. A closer (and more clear) image of the altar.
Some figures carved on the side of a column. A praying area centered on a painting of Mother Mary. Another of the many carvings on the columns of the church. The Statue of Crucified Christ, which according to my guidebooks, has a beard of human hair that is rumored to grow. The craftsman Anton Pilgram left this portrait of himself in the architecture.
They call this carving, Christ with Toothache. Classy, huh!?! The tiled roof of the church from the top of the North Tower. The tiled roof again at a slightly different angle. One of the two Heathen towers still left from the original Roman church. The Steffl (or Spire) which stands high above Vienna.
A closer picture of the top of the Steffl. Another part of the tiled roof of the cathedral. Looking down upon the horses in the courtyard from the top of the North Tower. The Singer Gate from the ground outside the Cathedral. A miniture version of the catherdral that sits just outside in the courtyard.
One of the many carvings on the outside of the church. An 18th century baroque statue on the northern end of the church that celebrates the 15th century defeat of the invading Turks. The North Tower. Looking past the main entrance of the cathedral. Looking straight at the main entrance.
Quicktime Movie Directory
More of the main entrance. A carving on the front of the catherdral. More carvings on the front of the cathedral. Two small, low-quality quicktime movies of the inside of the cathedral, beginning with a view of the Pilgrams Pulpit, and of the outside of the cathedral.
