Comment Suggestion
A lot of material to cover in 6-weeks. Could have benefited from weekly recitation or in general additional time with instructor for review not only of theoretical material but also of technical expectations.
Hyunseung was a wonderful instructor, and he worked incredibly hard for this course. One problem at times were homeworks that necessitated 25-30 hours of work a week, which I would argue is a bit excessive. Additionally, the quizzes were so difficult and at times focused on things that we hadn't focused on in the course that the average would often be around a 20%, which is also bad in that differentiating yourself in the class can become more a matter of luck. For instance, we would have lecture and lecture note readings mainly on the theoretical meanings of an ANOVA table, and then be responsible for knowing whether R-output saying "Degrees of Freedom" referred to DFE or DFT. Or doing mathematical derivations that, while seeming them done was instructive, left us unable to complete the quizzes on a consistent basis. But in any case, Hyunseung seems to be respecting the amount of work that we put in the class, and so I guess that seeing as we did learn a great deal and the grade will be correct, can't complain too much. Hyunseung is brilliant, excellent, and enthusiastic. He is extremely accessible and helpful. He has put far more hours and effort into this course than one can really ever hope for. One thing though is that he is still fairly young as a teacher, and partly because he is so smart, he has to learn more with time which aspects of the material are more or less intuitive to a student. I think that assigned course readings outside of the lecture notes and guessing where to read in the textbook would have been helpful. Also, it should be said that teaching a six-week summer course in this particular course was destined to be difficult.
The instructor did a very good job of stimulating interest in students by using humor and integrating stories into daily lessons. The homeworks took a long time and will require students to start at least 3 to 4 days ahead of the due date. However, they were very helpful to learning the material.
Linear Algebra should be a prereq to add proofs to regression.
