Readings
See the Readings page for readings. There is no
textbook for this course. Readings are papers and presentations at the
forefront of networking, ranging from home networking and wireless networking
to electronic commerce on the Internet.
Presentations
Each student will give one presentation, 20 minutes, and lead discussion for 20
minutes. Suggested papers are listed in the readings. Each student will also
assist in the preparation and rehearsal of 2 other papers. Each student will review
12 of the other papers in writing.
You will meet with me 3 times before giving your presentation:
-
One when you have
read and understand the paper and have a sketch of your Powerpoint presentation.
This should occur about
2 weeks before your talk.
-
Then a second meeting with me after you have gone over your
presentation with your crew (two students supporting your work). This should occur
1 week before your talk.
-
Then a third meeting on the day of class prior to your presentation with you,
your crew, and me. The presentation should be complete when you arrive.
For Bart Miller and Marv Solomon's excellent advice on giving presentations, see:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~bart/739/talk-guide.html
Reviews
Each written review mimics the review of a conference submission. You will score
the paper based on concepts and clarity and then write comments and suggestions for
improvements or future work. Examples are on-line in
Microsoft Word format,
HTML and
Simple ASCII format. Reviews are due at 7:45 AM on
the day the paper is presented. Reviews must be handed in personally. Late reviews
will not be accepted. Late reviews will receive no credit.
Grading
- 20% - Your presentation
- 12% - Presentations you assisted
- 48% - Written reviews of papers
- 20% - Class participation
Examinations
- There will be no mid-term exam
- There will be no final exam
Academic Misconduct
All reviews must be done individually. Cheating and
plagiarism will be dealt with in accordance with University
procedures (see the
Academic Misconduct Guide for Students).
Open and lively discussion of the papers is strongly encouraged AFTER the
deadline for submitting reviews on that paper. You are
encouraged to discuss with your peers or
the instructor ideas, approaches and techniques AFTER the presentation on that
paper.
If you have any questions on this, ask the instructor before you act.
