Description

Gotham City Impostors is a online-only multiplayer shooter set Gotham City, a city in the fictional DC comic universe and mostly known as Batman's home town. Many super hero (or super villain) impostors are at war with each other - just like Batman they don't have actual super powers, but use gadgets.

The fights are fast and action-oriented with three playing modes: team deathmatch, conquest and a capture-the-flag variant with special batteries (the variant is that each time a team brings a battery back, they are restricted to melee attacks for a short time). Like usually for shooters released at the time, the player unlocks upgrades while playing which can be used to make the own character stronger. There are four kinds of things that can be brought into battle: weapons (the standard fare between machine gun, shotgun and rocket launcher), gadgets (e.g. roller skates which make the player very fast, a grapple hook or double-jump shoes) which considerably change how the player moves through the levels, fun facts (permanent boni like more explosive damage) and items which only change the optical appearance. While the first three are gained with upgrades, the latter can be bought with the in-game currency gained after matches.

Besides the online fights, there is a tutorial and a challenge mode in which players have to move between two points within a limited amount of time.

Business model change

On August 31 2012, the PC version was made free-to-play, i.e. the game can be downloaded and played for free, but an in-game shop offers the opportunity to buy items like weapons or costumes for real money. At the same time, support for Games for Windows Live was dropped in favor of Steamworks.
