Description

Sanctum 2 is a hybrid between first-person shooter and tower defense game. The story is told in comic panels and is about an alien invasion. The basic principle is still the same as in the predecessor: before each level, the player sees which aliens will attack. Those have different abilities, e.g. some fly and others are only vulnerable from the back. In the following planning phase, the player sets walls and defense towers, there are different ones which certain advantages, into the levels which automatically attack the enemies. Between waves, the player receives some more resources to improve towers or construct new ones. A mission is won, when all waves are repelled without destroying the energy core.

In comparison to the predecessor, the shooter elements are more important: the levels are smaller, there is a limit on overall towers and the active shooting plays a larger role for success. Before each mission, one of four player characters with different primary weapons is chosen: Skye, the hero from Sanctum is an allrounder, Sweet's gun is useful against flying units, SiMo uses a sniper rifle and Haigen a shotgun. Beating missions rewards experience points which are invested into perks (can be assigned to the used soldier before starting a mission), new towers and secondary weapons. When the player character dies, it automatically respawns after a few seconds.

The single-player campaign (15 missions) can also be played in co-op with up to four other people and spiced up by activating difficulty modifiers like regenerating enemy health or a higher speed in exchange for more experience points. In survival mode, the goal is to survive as long as possible against enemy waves.
