Description

Scarygirl is a 2.5D side-scrolling platform game based on the franchise designed by Nathan Jurevicius, which was also adapted into a line of toys, a graphic novel and a feature film. Players control the character Scarygirl through a fantasy environment. She wears an eyepatch and one of her arms is a bone, while the other is a tentacle. The story starts when the octopus Blister visits Scarygirl because he found some dead leaves on the beach and he asks her to consult the Tree of Knowledge and save it. She initially washed ashore on an island and the octopus took her in. After a while however she began having nightmares about a mysterious man and also sets out to find out more about him. The storyline is separate from the graphic novel and the feature film. The game is entirely in 3D but the girl can usually only be moved over a single plane as in a 2D platformer, even though the camera regularly tilts to alter the perspective and the path turns. At certain points the path splits and different directions can be chosen.

She is able to jump and glide in the air, perform light and heavy attacks, and block incoming attacks. The latter can also be used to reflect incoming projectiles. Attacks can be combined into combos and heavy attacks often juggle enemies into the air. Certain attacks stun enemies and then they can be grabbed and flung away or used to slam other enemies. While gliding she swings her arm in the air to mimic a helicopter and during attacks her arms are extended. The girl can also interact with objects in the environment highlighted through a purple circle to open doors for instance and twinkling objects can be used to swing. Fish refills health and gems can be collected along the way. These acts as a currency for in-game stores to acquire more fish or upgrade abilities such as Anaconda Squeeze, Morph Tendrils, or the Rage Hook as an extension for her tentacle arm. By defeating enemies a scarymode meter in the bottom left corner is filled up. Once it is full Scarymode can be activated to make alter all attacks and make them stronger for a short time.

Later levels focus more on platforming with lots of jumping, rotating platforms and trampoline-like structures. Certain enemies can also be used to bounce into the air once they are grabbed. There are 21 levels in total and the locations Scarygirl visits include woods, a mountain, ice caves, swamps, spider caves, boglands, traplands, sewers, an action house, docks, the deep sea, and more. Most levels have a boss at the end and there are checkpoints to save progress throughout the levels. The game supports cooperative multiplayer with another player controlling Bunniguru. They can perform special moves together.
