On The Bleeding Edge

I've been running Ubuntu Linux (dual booting with XP) for a little while. Today I decided to upgrade it to the beta of Ubuntu's next release, Hoary.

I started out with an apt-get dist-upgrade. It doesn't look like it picked up everything, but seems mostly usable.

I switched from XFree86 to the X.Org server in the upgrade, and it broke my Nvidia binary driver, maybe because the kernel (and associated Nvidia kernel module) wasn't flagged for an automatic update. The driver version and the kernel module for it ended up with a version mismatch. Manually installing an updated kernel (2.6.10) and an updated linux-restricted-modules using apt got X11 into a usable state.

There were enough errors in the upgrade I wouldn't recommend it for any production system (although that comes with the territory of a pre-release version).
