Our first stop of the day comes into view from a good distance away.Winding around the tower we got remote views of most of the faces.The Indian legend is that a giant bear threatened young Sioux in the area. When the Great Spirit raised the earth beneath them, the frustrated bear could do nothing except leave claw marks in the side of the tower.
The columns are quite visible behind us.The sizable column in the foreground fell from the missing Our last view as we drove past.
I've never seen the HBO show Deadwood, but it is undoubtably more exciting than the present day town. Casinos and souvenir stores have pushed out any charm that once was here.The spot where Wild Bill Hickock was killed is now filled with slot machines. Even this sign is obscured from view by awnings advertising bingo jackpots.The 50 state flags line the walk to Mt. Rushmore.
The view from the observation deck, Walking along the 0.4 mile Presidents Trail, anyone willing to expend some effort can get less crowded views of the statue.The ultimate reward is a look up their noses.
A 563 foot high statue of Crazy Horse is in the works a few miles from from Rushmore. The face and arm seen are the results of 60 years of work.Unfortunately, the tours at Jewel Cave were sold out for the day, but Kacey qualified for the spelunking tour by squeezing through this 24x7.5 inch "tunnel".The 35 mile scenic Badlands loop...
