The Case for Alliance with the Capellan Confederation

An editorial in the Taurus Sun-Times, November 5, 3059.

Through the history of the Taurian Concordat, our greatest enemies have been the Federated Suns under the House of Davion and the Star League under the House of Cameron.

The House of Liao, on the other hand, has declined to participate in the systematic rape of our lands conducted by these foreign powers. The Capellan Confederation does not covet Taurian worlds; it has more pressing issues on its mind at the moment. The Capellan Confederation is not a threat to the peace and security of the Taurian Concordat.

Not only is the Capellan Confederation not a threat, but the Capellans' greatest enemies - the Davions - have throughout history been our greatest enemies, and the enemy of our enemy should be our friend. Additionally, the Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation is now the First Lord of the new Star League; thus, if we were to gain the Capellans' trust, and their Alliance, we would gain a respite against attack by a renewed Star League.

The Capellan Confederation has much to offer us: access to goods and markets we do not have, and advanced science, the knowledge of which could save our own researchers years of effort. The Capellan Confederation has a huge population compared to our own; their excess peoples could help populate our own new colonies, and their participation would add much-needed capital to these ventures. The Capellan Confederation possesses military technology far in advance of our own; they have rediscovered the techniques necessary to build even warships, those massive Leviathans that gave our own navy such success against the Davions in the Star League War. The Capellan military has combat veterans who have seen more conflict and gained more fighting experience than our Taurian Defense Forces have seen in the last two hundred years. Finally, the Capellan Confederation is allied with the Free Worlds League, who can give us all of these same benefits in abundantly larger quantities; and peace with the Free Worlds League would mean peace for our friends and allies, the people of the Magistracy of Canopus.

This would not be a one-sided alliance, however; we would not be the proverbial rowboat, paddling along behind the man o'war. Just as we need the Capellan Confederation, the Capellan Confederation needs us. Their effort at rebuilding after the Fourth Succession War, though impressive militarily, cost their economy and their nation dearly. Civilian industries were given a low priority in postwar Capellan life, and are only now beginning to regain their prominence. This has produced not only a shortage for civilian manufactured goods (which Taurian merchants and businessfolk can provide), but an overall low standard of living. Taurian educators, renowned across the Inner Sphere, can help to reverse this flow, and Taurian colonies can provide a safety valve for those elements of Capellan society that refuse to get along with the Capellan government, providing what disaffected citizens there surely must be a refuge, a place where they can rule themselves as they see fit, under the terms of our Constitution, and saving the Capellan government billions of L-bills that would otherwise be spent in law enforcement and incarceration. Finally, Capellan military forces, impressive as they already are, can only benefit from the increased supply of military equipment from Taurian suppliers.

In conclusion, I support and urge the invitation of the Capellan Confederation into our present Alliance. Our nations enjoy similar goals and similar problems, and a shared solution to those problems would be mutually beneficial. Our nations have much to learn from each other, and if this learning is allowed to take place, our nations will prosper together.
