Computer Science Lab

The Computer Science Lab (CSL) provides official computing for this class.

  • Getting Started with information and links on activating a CS account, machines, Unix classes (usually first or second week of classes), and CSL policies.
  • Complete Computer Systems Lab Documentation (including FAQ).
  • Programming assignments will be done on cabernet.cs.wisc.edu, 16-processor Sun E6000. If you wish to learn more about cabernet, run /usr/platform/sun4u/sbin/prtdiag -v on cabernet. Cabernet is symmetric multiprocessor, not a chip multiprocessor. Each each processor has its own L1 and L2 cache (and the L2 cache is called an E-cache). The processors are UltraSparc IIs (online manual). For example, Section 7.6 of the manual presents coherence details.

Software

  • Most software is pointed at by the appropriate homework assignment.
  • The Condor batch system may be valuable for submitting jobs for the project. The Condor Manual explain Condor, in general (e.g., Section 2.5 on submitting a job), while Condor's Wisconsin Page explain specifics about our Condor pools.
