Course Goals

The goal of this course is to cover the foundational concepts of databases and data management. We will study both the classic database theory, and also more recent developments and new areas of research. The first part of the class will focus on query languages and their complexity, while the second part will focus more on advanced topics in data management, such as provenance, stream processing, privacy and uncertain data. Some of the topics we will cover:

• Conjunctive Queries: query containment, query complexity, size bounds, worst-case optimal algorithms

• Datalog: semantics, evaluation, magic sets

• Parallel Query Evaluation

• Data Streaming

• Uncertain/Incomplete Data: repairs, probabilistic databases

• Provenance

• Privacy: k-anonymity, differential privacy

Grading

• Class participation & attendance: 15%

• Paper reviews: 15%

• Research project: 40%
