We present a case study that quantitatively compares probe-based (active)
measurements with router-based SNMP (passive) measurements of loss data
gathered in a widely deployed infrastructure.  We find little correlation
between time series and distributional characteristics of our data sets.
Our results demonstrate the challenges in probe-based loss studies and
suggest the potential offered by the router-based approach.
