Industrial Relations

Cooperation and collaboration with industry has become a productive and necessary aspect of our instructional and research programs. Primarily through our Industrial Affiliates Program, we interact with a large number of companies and their research and development laboratories located throughout the country. The need for highly qualified scientists in industry, academia, and government is the main driving force behind this important symbiosis. We also believe that these relationships with industry are necessary to assure the long-term growth of the field.

Over the last two years our department received large corporate donations from more than 20 companies. Sun Microsystems donated Enterprise Server UltraSPARC multiprocessors worth nearly $2.5 million; Hewlett-Packard donated 40 Pentium Pro's for an instructional laboratory, plus various other high-performance machines for research; Intel provided $4.8 million worth of equipment to a University-wide consortium in which Computer Sciences plays a central role, as well as cash and equipment grants to several faculty; Cisco provided high-speed network equipment; and Microsoft donated software and provided new workstations for 20 faculty, plus gave several individual cash and equipment grants. Additional gifts to the Computer Sciences Department include graduate fellowships, undergraduate scholarships, research/instructional equipment, faculty development grants, and unrestricted cash. The research and instructional equipment, and the faculty and student support, provided by these corporations constitute a major asset of our department.

Relationships between the department and these companies include a variety of joint research activities, as well as other interactions of mutual interest. For example, as part of our industrial affiliate program we provide industrial corporations with support for student recruiting. Our affiliates over the last two years are listed below.
