Norman Grubb was the Director of the Worldwide Evangelisation Crusade, founder of the Christian Literature Crusade and was one of the founders of the Inter Varsity Fellowship. He was a celebrated author in evangelical circles. The Lutterworth Press has published many of his books including C.T. Studd.

Norman Grubb, the son of an Irish clergyman, was born in 1895. He was a decorated war hero, receiving the Military Cross for his service in the Gloucester regiment during World War I. After the war, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and married Pauline Studd, the daughter of the famous missionary, C.T. Studd. The Grubbs served as missionaries to the Belgium Congo where Norman translated the New Testament into the African trade language, Bangala. After Studd's death in 1931, Norman served as British and General Secretary of the Worldwide Evangelization Crusade until 1965. He was insrumental in the formation of the Christian Literature Crusade and the beginnings of Intervarsity Fellowship.
Mr. Grubb is the author of Rees Howells, Intercessor, the acclaimed biography of the Welsh coal miner who became the founder of the Bible College of Wales. Rees Howells, now in its 15th printing, has been translated into more than twenty languages and has sold over ten million copies worldwide. Mr. Grubb has spoken at the Presidential Prayer Breakfast and taught at lay conferences such as Faith at Work. Following many years of teaching, writing and travel, Norman Grubb died at the age of 98 in 1993.
This book is the story about a man whose life and ministry was uniquely guided by the Holy Spirit. It is the story of a humble man who learned the secret of cultivating a rich, inside life with God through prayer, and whose life bore abundant fruit as a consequence. Although this type of life has to be experienced in order to be understood, Rees Howells does offer some compelling insight on how the Holy Ghost dealt with the very inner reaches of his heart in order to teach him obedience. Mr. Howells is very candid about how, and in what ways his flesh fought the leading of the spirit; how he had to do as the apostle Paul admonishied and "cast down reasonings and bring every thought to the obedience of Christ. This is a wonderful book that can be enormously edifying, whether you are reading it as I did, as part of your own personal devotional time with God, or in a group Bible study. Put simply, if you want to read a book about being a true disciple of Jesus, about what it means to count the cost, take up your cross and follow Him, Rees Howells: Intercessor is the book for you. But a word of caution: the type of life set forth in this book is not the run-of-the-mill, intellectual Christianity that so predominates our popular culture in the 21st Century. This book is a call to a rugged faith, a call to "earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints." Read it prayerfully, and get ready to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind." For this book will compel the serious Christian to "present your body as a living sacrifice to God..."

The first time I attempted to read this book, I could not read more than a chapter or two without having to put it down. Of all the books I have ever read, except for the Bible, no book has challenged me more than has REES HOWELLS INTERCESSOR. Setting aside my personal theological differences I cannot but be challenged by the dedication of this prayer warrior. His life, his struggles, his apparent failures, and his triumphs, all call me out of my comfort zone to a life of greater commitment to the God I serve. The conviction of that challenge was what kept interrupting my reading. Only when I was ready to subject myself to the same death to self-will Rees Howells endured was I able to go back and read some more. A chapter or two at a time I walked through the life of Rees Howells. More than a reading, this book is an experience.

This book changed my relationship with the Lord more than any single book (outside of the Bible). It is a must read for anyone, not just those gifted in intercession. The author systematically reveals how God works with Rees Howells to purify his heart and become a true doulos/servant (sold-out bond slave). I will read this book again and again until the return. Oh yeah, bring the kleenex!

I have read this book for the second time - laughing on many occassions and weaping on still many more. Rees Howells' intimate (and normal) communication with God in the person of the indwelling Holy Spirit broke my heart (again, the second reading) with the recognition of how "watered down" and powerless Christianity seems today in America and in my own life. If you desire to see what a life of faith and fellowship with God can look like - this is the book. It has deepened my spiritual resolve to cooperate with God to break "self" that His life can be manifest in this vessel.

Wow! This book is unbelieveable. I had never heard of Rees Howells before reading this book. But as I read, I was challenged and convicted, by his faith and his willingness to do whatever God asked of him.
I disagree with the reviewer who said that this book has a theological problem. The things Rees did (like not wearing a hat and growing his hair long) are things the Lord asked him to do. They are things that he didn't just decide to do on his own. I think that is an important distinction to make. I also believe it is impossible to effectively intercede unless you walk a mile in their shoes. There were occassions when Rees did this in a literal sense. But it seems to me, that he did it more often in a spiritual sense.
I found myself identifying a lot with Rees as I read. The man was not perfect, he definitely had faults. I don't mean to imply that I think he didn't. But the Lord used him in a mighty way and I think Rees has things to teach us all.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to break out of complacent Christianity. This book will change your life and your relationship with the Lord, if you read it with an open mind and an open, teachable heart. This is a book to read slowly. You will want to take time to digest and meditate on it. I would also recommend reading it more than once. I have often found that I always gain new insights on the second or third time through. This is one book you will want to glean every possible insight from. There is so much here.
This is one of the most life-changing books I have ever read.

When I first read this book I had to reread several sections just to absorb the content. While I had heard of such men, I had never read their own accounts of how God used them. Every Christian ought to read this book, if for nothing else, than just to have the exhilerating experience of seeing God work through the life of another. This book will bring conviction concerning your prayer life, your trust in God, your obedience to the Holy Spirit and a number of other "lax" areas that most saints refuse to acknowledge exist in their lives. Again, I believe this book is a must to be read.
