About the Author
Jayne Castle, the author of Deception Cove, The Lost Night, Canyons of Night, Midnight Crystal, Obsidian Prey, Dark Light, Silver Master, Ghost Hunter, After Glow, and After Dark, is a pseudonym for Jayne Ann Krentz, the author of more than fifty New York Times bestsellers. She writes contemporary romantic suspense novels under the Krentz name, as well as historical novels under the pseudonym Amanda Quick. She lives in Seattle.

In THE HOT ZONE it is Halloween on Rainshadow Island. The latest installment of Castle's paranormal futuristic Rainshadow series is about the creatures that go bump in the night. At times funny and suspenseful, this is the story of a woman who fears having been the victim of an experiment and a man who has come to see if she is a danger.
THE STORY: Sedona Snow is a gatekeeper which means that she has a talent which allows her to open gates in the underground on Harmony. While on an expedition, she is kidnapped and subjected to experiments whereby she obtains an additional talent which allows her to produce and control fire. She knows that double talents are notorious for being unstable and descending into madness. She fears for herself and ends up on the island of misfits (Rainshadow) managing an inn.
Cyrus Jones (yes, one of those Jones from Krentz's Arcane series and also in the Harmony series book MIDNIGHT CRYSTAL) is the first boss of the newly organized Rainshadow Ghost Hunters Guild. Cyrus is known as Dead Zone Jones and some people believe he has that name because he has no talent. Cyrus actually possesses a dangerous talent that people instinctively fear. Ostensibly, Cyrus in on Rainshadow to help with the dangerous preserve areas located in the previous books in the series. He is also on Rainshadow looking for Sedona who the Jones are concerned may be a dangerous multi-talent. He doesn't expect to find a sexy woman to whom he is instantly attracted.
As Halloween comes to Rainshadow, there are dangerous alien creatures, creepy new landscapes and funny costumes (especially for dust bunnies). There is also dangers that bring a man and a woman who don't think that they can ever find love together.Read more ›

This book was not unpleasant, as Sedona said to Cyrus at one point (although she wasn't talking about books). Not a bit! Still, it is missing the interesting secondary characters that populated Ms. Krentz's earlier works, and which made them the treat they were. As has become standard, the hero was indistinguishable from every other hero in the series. If there is a penny's worth of difference between Cyrus, Harry, and Slade, I can't think of it offhand. They're interchangeable, from personality to physical characteristics.
"Standard" is a good way to describe the Harmony books now. Just as Betty Neels' books had interchangeable heros and maybe 3 or 4 templates for her heroines, with a few set plot lines, Krentz/Castle's books have become similarly predictable. Both authors are/were prolific writers, churning out 2-3 books per year, which seems to almost invariably result in a lack of creativity and imagination in some areas. Mind, JAK's ability to dream up various talents (such as the one displayed by Dead Zone Jones, and Sedona's second talent) is entertaining, and adds value to the stories.
I am one of her readers who would rather she reduce the number of the books she writes in favor of spending more time on each story, filling them with the intriguing, quirky characters that made them the delights they were.
This is a picky point, but considering JAK has been writing professionally for decades I believe it's a fair one: she has a regrettable tendency to overuse certain words. In the past it's been "remember?" and "evenly" but now it's "weird." Wish I had a buck for every "weird" or "weirdness" she used!

I can't give JAK less than 3 stars. She's an incredible writer and to produce with the volume and the imagination it takes great talent. I always preorder so I don't risk missing a release. This one I could have missed and never noticed. I had to make myself pick it up and continue reading. I even pulled up an old book on my Kindle and re-read it in the middle somewhere. No joke, I stopped to color code my closet with winter clothes...no rush...just didn't really want to read any more at that time and I needed to do something productive. This book could have been a 10 page novella or short story add-on without losing any of the story line. Latest Jones hero (Cyrus) finds his love (Sedona) after pursuing her to solve a mystery surrounding her earlier kidnapping. The "ordeal" seems mundane at best and his tracking down the details which involve the infamous Sylvester formula are so predictable as to make this reader begin to skip pages to get to something that might be new. No solutions or new details around the island events of the last book...still unknown and no activity there. New environments are introduced to add new questions but again no solutions. Even the "intricate" family relations are so simplistic it is hard to really care whether Sedona reunites or not. The absolute best parts of the book are around the dust bunny Lyle. Lyle and his Halloween antics are fun but not really worth an entire book. I really wanted to love this book. I am so very much into the series but this just didn't seem to add anything to the story line at all. I finally forced myself to finish it just so I could move it to the archive.
