About the Author

New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a double major in English and history and an emphasis on Shakespearean studies. She taught high school English for three years in San Antonio before leaving education to pursue a career as a novelist. Deanna makes her home in Virginia, where she lives with her husband and daughter and is hard at work on her next novel.

More About the Author

A sixth-generation native Texan, New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn grew up in San Antonio, where she met her college sweetheart. She married him on her graduation day and went on to teach high school English and history. During summer vacation at the age of twenty-three, she wrote her first novel. After three years as a teacher, Deanna left education to have a baby and pursue writing full-time. Fourteen years and many, many rejections after her first novel, she signed two three-book deals with MIRA Books.

"Sex, lies and awesome clothing descriptions" is how one reader described Deanna's debut novel, SILENT IN THE GRAVE, published in January 2007. The first in the Silent series, the book follows Lady Julia Grey as she investigates the mysterious death of her husband with the help of the enigmatic private inquiry agent Nicholas Brisbane. From the drawing rooms of the aristocracy to a Gypsy camp on Hampstead Heath, Silent in the Grave deftly captures the lush ambience of Victorian London.

The series continues with the second book, SILENT IN THE SANCTUARY (January 2008), a classic English country house murder mystery with a few twists and turns for Brisbane and Lady Julia along the way. Silent on the Moor (March 2009), set in a grim manor house on the Yorkshire moors, is the third adventure for Lady Julia and the mysterious Brisbane.

March 2010 saw a departure from the series with the release of THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST, a mid-Victorian Gothic thriller that chronicles the adventures of novelist Theodora Lestrange as she leaves the safety and security of her Edinburgh home for the dark woods and haunted castles of Transylvania. Deanna takes Lady Julia and her companions to the exotic foothills of the Himalayas with DARK ROAD TO DARJEELING (October 2010). The fifth book in the series, THE DARK ENQUIRY, sees the return of Lady Julia and Brisbane to London for their most puzzling adventure--one that strikes painfully close to home.

Deanna plots her books from her home in Virginia. After one too many hot Texas summers, Deanna and her husband packed up their daughter and moved to the mid-Atlantic state, where they enjoy the fall leaves but deeply miss good Tex-Mex cooking.

Still Virginia has been good to this author. Deanna's novel SILENT IN THE GRAVE won the 2008 RITA® Award for Novel with Strong Romantic Elements and the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award for Best First Mystery. The Lady Julia Grey series has been nominated for several other awards, including an Agatha, three Daphne du Mauriers, a Last Laugh, a total of five RITAs, and two Dilys Winns. Her fourth Lady Julia novel, DARK ROAD TO DARJEELING, was a finalist for the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Historical Mystery, and her fifth Lady Julia release, THE DARK ENQUIRY, was a New York Times bestseller.

Lady Julia's holiday adventure, SILENT NIGHT, a digital novella, will be available November 1, 2012, while her next stand-alone novel, A SPEAR OF SUMMER GRASS, debuts May 1, 2013. Set in Africa in 1923, A SPEAR OF SUMMER GRASS follows the daring flapper heiress Delilah Drummond as she travels to Africa in disgrace only to find the adventure of a lifetime.

I would recommend this book for those who enjoy action with their romance and those who have read Raybourn's earlier books.

In addition to book club discussion questions, this volume also contains an excellent Q&A with the author at the back of the book, which I found to be very worthwhile.

The hows and whys and whos of her getting to Syria seem a bit implausible at first but make for an enjoyable escape read that is very well written.

Deanna Raybourn has been on my to-read list for a long time. When I saw “Night of a Thousand Stars” I jumped at the chance to finally read her! I’m so glad to say that Raybourn did not disappoint! The characters were so fun and loveable. Even the secondary characters were interesting to read about. I expected this to be just romance but it was really a lot more!
The heroine, Poppy Hammond/March was a delightful character. She was just so endearing, funny, complicated and human. When the story begins she is in her wedding dress escaping through a window because she realizes that she wants more out of her life than to just become a Viscounts wife. Despite the prestige and high titled in society, she is not happy or satisfied. Poppy spent most of her life floating from one project/finance/ school to another. Although she knows that her decision to leave her fiancé at the alter will make her an outcast in society and a deep disappointment to her family she knows that she cannot marry. Sebastian Cantrip/Fox is there to help Poppy escape. She believes him to be a vicar and he does not correct her. Sebastian can’t help but rescue Poppy and drives her to her father’s home. There are many parts to Sebastian and for the first half of the book he remains a mystery to be solved. He is also seeking adventure. Poppy is looking for adventure and when she seeks Sebastian to thank him for his help she is intrigued by him and her search takes her on an unexpected journey.
I loved both Sebastian and Poppy. Individually and together they were really enjoyable. When Poppy arrives in Damascus she has no idea just how much adventure is in store for her. Rayburn was able to balance the romance and mystery and the development of the characters.

The thing that I love about Deanna Raybourn’s books is that she writes these female characters who defy historical convention. She writes in such a way that once I start her books, I am captivated and am unable to focus on reading anything else until the very end. Her latest book, Night Of A Thousand Stars is one that I added to my OMG MUST READ THIS TBR pile immediately after finishing City Of Jasmine, a book that had me closing the covers and popping over to goodreads to see what is next. Just as Evie and Julia are headstrong and vivacious women, Poppy is quite the winsome character. I loved that Night Of A Thousand Stars takes us back to Damascus and brings us on a journey that weaves her 1920s mysteries together with her Lady Julia Grey mysteries. Reading this book was like receiving the ultimate reader payoff.

Night Of A Thousand Stars opens up with main character Poppy Hammond in a wedding dress, about to get married to an aristocrat named Gerald. Only, Poppy does not feel very strongly about Gerald. So, she’s talking to this curate named Sebastian, when she decides she can’t go through with the marriage and needs to escape. So, Poppy begs Sebastian to drive her to her estranged father’s house. Her father is someone that we’ve all met before, assuming you have read the Lady Julia books. There, Poppy realizes that something has to give. She takes some time to enjoy the countryside with her sassy lady’s maid called Masterman. Meanwhile, Poppy finds herself in desperate need to thank Sebastian, so, she tries to find him only to discover that he is halfway across the world in Damascus. A scheme involving posing as someone in need of a job occurs, and we see Poppy torn in her loyalties and about to embark on a grand desert adventure as she is set upon finding Sebastian.

If you read City of Jasmine you will be familiar with the setting and some of the characters in Night of A Thousand Stars. This story features Poppy March and Sebastian Fox and the setting is once again in Damascus and the surrounding area. There is so much detail in the description of the area it is like going on a tour of the city in the 1920’s. The book starts with Poppy running away just before the start of her wedding. It starts like a comedy continues with comic touches as it becomes filled with tension and danger.

Poppy has never fit in and is trying to find her way in life. After only one meeting with Sebastian Julia feels something for him. He disappears after helping her escape from the church and getting her to her Father’s. When she thinks he is in trouble she decides to travel to half way around the world to help him. The big reveal here is that Poppy is a March and kin to Lady Julia Grey making this a bridge between the two series.

Look for a few characters from City of Jasmine. Even Gabriel Starke makes a brief appearance. I found the first and last third of the book to move very quickly but the middle third to drag a little. This was Poppy’s story and there is a lot of dialog that is there to show how she reacts and how she changes. Sebastian is there to help but plays a lesser but very strong role. One of the fun elements in the story was how Poppy kept under-estimating Sebastian.

There were several interesting new side characters. Most appeared and disappeared only to appear again. Many were not what they seemed. There were enough clues that I did suspect the role some of the side characters would play before the book was over.

The scene is set for additional books set in this time period.
