Suz Brockmann is the award-winning author of over fifty books, and is widely recognized as one of the leading voices in romantic suspense. Her work has earned her repeated appearances on the New York Times bestseller list, as well as numerous awards, including Romance Writers of America's #1 Favorite Book of the Year and two RITA awards.

My sister put me on to the Brockman books and I have mostly enjoyed and re-read them, However, this one was far too long. I even started a second book before I finished this one and I Never do that. As previous reviewers have said, too many characters, too many plot threads, too many stakeholders, too many romantic entanglements, etc. And, again, as a previous reviewer said, Brockman's "gay is good" soapbox has become very tiresome. Don't bludgeon me over the head with a message I already agree with, certainly not in a book that is purportedly in the standard romantic suspense category.
I'm quite annoyed that I paid hardback price for this book.

I really, really love Suzanne Brockmann's writing style, but I hate this book. Brockmann used to have the ability to make you fall in love with all of her heroes, but the main romance in "Do or Die" drags and I can't detect much of a spark between the hero and heroine. And as for the B-plot....
Well, I'm a liberal and this is 2014 so I don't have any objections to reading about gay marriage. As a matter of fact, I've always admired Suz for injecting so much diversity into the Troubleshooters world and I do appreciate her efforts. However, the B-plot in this book doesn't work. It just doesn't. The flashbacks are boring and predictable, and in the "present day" there is no conflict in their relationship. Obviously there's inherent tension in a kidnapping, but you never doubt for a moment that these two guys love each other and are going to live HEA, so what's the point of including their relationship in this novel?
If I hadn't had any expectations for this book and if this had come from any other author, I probably would have given this book three stars. But Brockmann can do better, so I can only give it one.

I haven't read a Suzanne Brockman novel in several years. I loved her earlier novels because there is probably no author who can develop characters or write an action sequence as well as she does.
However, this book was a real departure from her earlier Seal Team novels.
Very little character development of the hero and heroine (Ian & Phoebe) and almost no back-story made it hard to understand their motivations and actions. We get little or no explanation of Ian's motivation to join the Navy or why he left the Seal Team and almost nothing about Phoebe. What we do know about Phoebe makes her seem stupid. In addition, too many characters were introduced which made it hard to keep them straight.
The plot was very convoluted. A rogue ex-Navy Seal is in jail who also leads covert operations. A major international kidnapping occurs and the FBI felt only find one person (the Hero) could complete the mission. So he is released from prison to do just that and a very junior lawyer insists on going on the mission. The two dodge death squads, cold-blooded adversaries, vindictive mob bosses and a wealthy psychopath.
However by the novel's midpoint, the hero and heroine's romance was clearly second place to his gay brother's romance and far too much time is spent on the romance of these gay secondary characters. The whole action-suspense plot becomes about protecting the romance of the hero's brother. I like plot twists, but changing the main romance of the hero and heroine for another was a poor substitute. I found myself a bit irritated that the hero and heroine's romance wasn't going to be the main romance of the story. For example, the hero and heroine became sexually intimate and even agree to a long term relationship. But then their emotional relationship became quite boring.Read more ›

I have always enjoyed her romance/ navy seal themed books, but while I firmly believe in marriage equality/ equal rights for all, homosexual romance is not my choice of genre. Just like, I would imagine, homosexuals do not want to read about heterosexual sex. I enjoyed Jules Cassidy's story and like his character, but brockmanns books have become a platform for her to push her beliefs (which I happen to agree with) at her readers. They read more like a persuasive essay than a romance/action novel.

20-something lawyer resists being fired by ex-Navy-SEAL-turned-jewel-thief Hero who she's been sent to represent on her 1st week at the law firm. 30-something Hero has been waiting patiently in prison for 18 months for the completion of the deal he struck with a notorious mafia. He wasn't happy to be freed prematurely by a US government agency in exchange for his security knowledge of a Middle Eastern consulate, where 2 kids are currently being held hostage. His concern for the safety of his brother and his family makes him abduct heroine and her car. Heroine won't let Hero dissuade her from his plans to protect his brother and help save the hostaged kids. Their time together increases their intimacy but their priority is the immediate danger surrounding them. This, however, changes when their protect and rescue plans go awry and heroine's life is endangered.
This book was difficult to read. It was 400+ pages that read more like an action tv-series script. Multiple-pages worth of frame by frame description of the characters' actions and their POV(point of view) about everyday details that took away from the focus of the main romance and main action-suspense plot. The action-suspense plot by itself had lots of factors and people/groups involved. It would have been more exciting if it wasn't bogged down by so much. There were also multiple secondary characters, secondary romances, and two primary romances. When I wasn't bored by this long-winded book, I felt manipulated by how the main romance between Hero and heroine got switched with the romance of Hero's brother and his partner. By about 50% of the book, the main romance became that of Hero's brother. Hero and heroine played the supporting role and became 1 of the secondary romances.Read more ›
