Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The winds of change blow along the West Coast in Mallery’s (Three Sisters, 2013) latest Blackberry Island story. First, the older brother of a girl for whom she babysat turns up unexpectedly in nurse Nina Wentworth’s life. Then Nina’s former fiancé, now a doctor, also shows up in the Washington State island community, and both men want friendship and maybe more. Navy pilot Kyle, who had a crush on Nina, says she’s still his fantasy, while Dr. Dylan Harrington tries to win Nina back as a friend. Meanwhile, Nina’s younger sister leaves her husband in Southern California to return home as she tries to find herself. In the midst of this chaos, Nina’s lesbian mother and her partner return from their antique-hunting trip with a multimillion-dollar painting. Since Nina has always been the levelheaded one who took care of the family, she’s expected not only to figure out what to do with the painting but also to unravel her and her sister’s tangled love lives. Mallery pulls out all the stops in this highly enjoyable and insightful, funny, and poignant look at self-sacrifice and romantic entanglement. --Pat Henshaw

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susan Mallery has entertained millions of readers with her witty and emotional stories about women and the relationships that define their lives. She has published more than 100 romance and women's fiction novels, beginning with two books the same month when she was just out of college. Her books have spent more than 120 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list and have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestsellers list, statistically tied for #1 (THREE LITTLE WORDS, a Fool's Gold romance). Known for her keen insight into human nature and her humorous take on life, Susan Mallery has been described by RT Book Reviews as "in a class by herself!" and was featured as a Red Hot Read in Cosmopolitan Magazine. In 2013 and 2014, four of her books were named each year to Amazon's "Best Book of the Month" list.

With a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Susan is one of the few writers who can understand her royalty statement. She went on to get a Masters in Writing Popular Fiction and has extensively studied story structure in screenwriting courses, though she has no plans to write for the screen. Her goal, always, is to give readers a story that will move them, populated with characters who feel like real people.

Booklist says, "Novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and Publisher's Weekly calls her prose "luscious and provocative." Susan appreciates critical praise, but she values praise from her readers even more. She credits her successful career to the loyal readers who rush out to buy each new book on the day it's released.

With the advent of ebooks, Susan's career has soared even higher, and her books make regular appearances on both print and ebook bestsellers lists. She has embraced the Digital Age with a robust website (www.susanmallery.com), an active presence on Facebook (www.facebook.com/susanmallery) and a free Susan Mallery app for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices (www.mobileroadie.com/apps/susanmallery). At www.foolsgoldca.com, she also provides bonus content such as after-the-happily-ever-after updates for the Fool's Gold romances, her most popular ongoing series.

Born and raised in California, Susan lives with her family in Seattle, where she survives the dreary days of winter with the help of a "happy lamp" and plenty of coffee.

Susan Mallery rarely writes a bad book and Evening Stars is no exception. It was fabulous, thought provoking, anger producing, and giggle worthy. The added bonus of having two men from Nina's past pursuing her, was icing on the cake.

Nina has always been the older sister, the sensible one, the mother in her family. Oh, Nina and her sister Averil had a mother, but not one that took her mothering job very seriously. Now Nina needs to get a life, stop making decisions for everyone else, and simply worry about herself. However, how can she when everyone around her screws up so much? How can she think only about herself and her needs when that would be so selfish of her...or would it?

Nina really needs to learn that she doesn't always know best and that sometimes others need to make mistakes.

What will really get you about this book is exactly how real these characters feel...how real the situations are (to a point). Perhaps I can relate to this novel on a more basic level because I too am an older sister with a mother who was not the best at being mature. Yes you do have to leave your disbelief behind since some things that happen in this book, happen in such dramatic and unbelievable ways, but Ms Mallery is such a wonderful story-teller that it won't be painful to do at all!

This was a wonderful, less than fluffy, ultra sexy and somewhat thought provoking novel and one that I think you will enjoy.*ARC provided by publisher for reviewing purposes*

Evening Stars is the third book in the Blackberry Island series. This is definitely not a typical Susan Mallory book. It's not a romance in the typical sense. It's more of an inside look at Family, friends, life, dreams and love.

Nina Wentworth, first introduced in Blackberry Island Book Two, is a small town nurse who wants to pursue her dreams and the life she forfeited taking care of her sister and her mother. Nina is a strong person, but as the story develops, we learn she is actually vulnerable and afraid to take the risk and let go.

Enter two men from Nina's past to complicate her life even further. There's the younger Navy Aviator, who vowed his love for her...when he was twelve and she was sixteen...who caught her off guard (literally) and offered uncomplicated "fun". Shortly after she begins dating, her first love, having recently returned to the Island, starts campaigning to win her back. Nina, thinking one relationship is casual, not designed for the long haul, and the other merely friendship, finds herself caught between two men who love her.

As with the other Blackberry Island novels, Evening Stars, has additional storylines. Unlike the other novels, these storylines, are all family connected. We meet Nina's younger sister Averil, who initially comes across as a self centered "why me" troubled young wife. Averil returns to Blackberry Island on a journey of self discovery...what does she want...what does she need...and how does her husband fit in? The final storyline focuses on Nina's irresponsible and flighty mother Bonnie and an accidental discovery that could change Nina's world forever.

Susan Mallery seems to have really captured the essence of dysfunctional family dynamics and how they impact us throughout our lives.

I loved the other books in this series. I hated this one. Unlikeable characters, a whole lot of whining, strife and overall unpleasantness. The character of Kyle was ridiculous. He fell in love with her when he was 12 when she babysat for him. Creepy weird stalker character.

Ick.

Evening Stars, the final Blackberry Island novel is a compelling story about a complicated family dynamic. All of the character are forced to take a look at themselves and how they deal with each others past, present and what they want for their future. It takes place on a small island where the community is strong; some pull their strength from this island community and others turn away from it.

The story will make you laugh, cry, worry and pull at your heart strings. Susan creates a natural flow that is engaging; I love the continuation of characters to bring everything full circle. It was fun to return to Blackberry Island and I look forward to the next series.

I highly recommend this book and the other two in the series!

Susan Mallery has once again wrote us a book that's full of insight about the way families work and the struggle that goes with a person finding their place of acceptance and love. Her characters are filled with emotions that ring true and easy to relate to in our own lives. Evening Stars is the third and last book in Susan Mallery's Blackberry Island trilogy, but is also a stand-alone novel. It takes place on a small island that young people either grow to love or can't wait to get away from. It will pull at your heart strings and make you laugh, worry, cry, and experience the fullness of love right along with the characters.

Susan helps us follow the story of Nina, the responsible one, the one that gave up her own dreams to take care of others and always seems to get left with cleaning up messes. We meet her little sister Averil ( who has always been cared for and needs to figure out what is wrong in her life before she loses her husband and her job), her mother (who was never able to handle the burden of that title), and two men from Nina's past that both seem interested in rekindling their relationship. What's a girl to do?

Whether you've read Susan's books before or if this is your first, I think you will enjoy this book and Susan's talent of bringing words to life. I know I did.
