After their father’s death, when her brother flees to London, Patience Creighton devotes herself to the role of headmistress of their father’s beloved Rosemere School for Young Ladies. Forced to handle the day-to-day operations of the boarding school while battling her mother’s deep depression, twenty-five year old Patience has all but given up her girlish hopes of being swept away by a handsome gentleman. But those nearly forgotten dreams of romance are awakened when the estate’s dashing owner, William Sterling, appears on the school’s doorstep after suffering a vicious roadside assault. Sterling’s less-than-sterling past has finally caught up to him, and his life, his happiness, and the future of Rosemere all depend on his willingness to adjust his moral compass and his ability to right past wrongs.
Having just returned from living for two years in England, and being intrigued by the historical concept of estates and the complex relationships between landlords and their tenants, I was anxious to read The Headmistress of Rosemere by Sarah E. Ladd. When I finished the last page and closed the novel, I felt nothing. No sense of having learned something, no disappointment that the story had ended, no anticipation for the next novel (this is Book Two in the Whispers on the Moors series). Nothing. It’s a very formulaic historical romance, and is as prim and proper as the setting dictates. I found the characters and their problems to be very predictable, and felt no urgency to turn the page to find out what happens next. In fact, I cruised through most of the book on autopilot, which is not the way I want to spend the precious little time I have for reading.Read more ›

Patience has grown up living at the Rosemere school that her family has run for years. When her father dies, her whole life changes. Her older brother flees to London to “settle Father’s affairs,” but has not been heard from in over 6 months. Her mother has fallen into a deep depression and Patience fears for her sanity. So, at 25, Patience is the headmistress of the school. With the help of her teachers and staff, she keeps everything running smoothly.
William Sterling owns Rosemere and all the land surrounding it, but he and his father before him have been good land lords. But Sterling has fallen on hard times, due mostly to his own hand, gambling. But he is home and striving to keep the land and make a better man of himself.
One night, the stable at Rosemere catches fire, and Sterling rushes to help. He pulls a young student from the flames, saving her life. And his relationship with Rosemere and her pretty headmistress strengthens. The following weeks and months are filled with drama and decisions for both Patience and William.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are easy to follow and get to know. As they struggle with decisions, they both turn to God for guidance. It is a very readable book. Just perfect for these cold winter days after Christmas.

Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for romance, mild violence, and some situations
Best for Ages: 15 and up
After having had the privilege of Sarah Ladd's début The Heiress of Winterwood: I was even more excited to see what the second book in the series would be about. I have to say that I thought The Headmistress of Rosemere was even better than Sarah Ladd's first book.
This story was far deeper than I first thought it was going to be. I really thought I had it all figured out toward the beginning and even as I edged toward the middle. However, as soon as her brother returns the story began to take twists I never saw coming. It was a wonderful story that kept me turning pages.
My only complaint for the entire book was a revelation about William's character. I don't want to give away any part of the book. However, I felt like one huge revelation of William's past was too late in the book. William had a troubled, even sinful past that he is working hard to get away from. You are starting to see the change in him when you find out another secret about him. This is my own and only complaint about the entire story.
Patience was amazing. I have read few books where I felt a character was so well developed. It reminded me very much of a Jane Austen book character. At the beginning I felt as if everyone was making her life hard, and then I began to understand that she didn't see everything correctly. To me, that is something only a master character creator can do.
The setting like the last book was delightful. It was the feeling of your favorite Jane Austin. The dresses, the customs, and the houses are all so fun. The historical daily life details are woven into the story flawlessly.

Patience Creighton grew up at Rosemere as the daughter of its headmaster, but now her father is dead, her mother wallowing in her grief, her brother has struck out on his own. So Patience assumes to the job of headmistress, along with the responsibility it entails. As it turns out, even though her father left everything to Patience's brother, the Creighton's do not own Rosemere, but lease it from a man called William Sterling.
William, is a man with troubles of his own, up to his eyeballs in gambling debts.
Will William be able to step up and take responsibility for his actions?
I loved Patience and William together, they interacted naturally and their dialogue was meaningful. The setting of this novel was so realistic, with a twisting plot that brims with mystery and intrigue that had me glued to that pages.
One of my favorite side characters was Emma, a young girl at Patience's school with very little to her name, who was always glowingly lively, inquisitive child.
I came to really respect William, for his determination to take his responsibilities seriously and his desire to return to the faith his mother showed him when he was a child.
Overall this was a fantastic read, that was everything I could have wanted from a Regency novel, and much more, with a well-researched setting, and characters, great plotting, mystery, love, faith, great characters that connect with each other and with pacing that made it nearly impossible to put down! Highly recommend!
