Editorial Reviews

Review

"Joanne continues to be a compelling and challenging protagonist and the supporting characters are wonderful, even the villains."

--RT Book Reviews on Raven Calls

" ...the twists and turns will have readers shaking their heads while devouring the next page."

-- USA Today on Raven Calls

"Fans of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files novels and the works of urban fantasists Charles de Lint and Tanya Huff should enjoy this fantasy/mystery's cosmic elements. A good choice."
-Library Journal on Thunderbird Falls

"Readers...won't be disappointed. The author keeps the action fast-paced, Walker and Morrison's repartee is fantastic (even when he's a wolf), and the magic is exciting...readers will be left eager to see what happens next, both with Walker's shamanic career and her ever-evolving relationship with Morrison." - Publishers' Weekly on Spirit Dances

"Murphy has a likeable prose style, presents us with an engaging set of characters, and has a good sense of how to blend humor and action with a dollop of mysticism and folklore...If you don't find this book entertaining, you're probably asleep."
-World Fantasy Award-winning author Charles de Lint in Fantasy and Science Fiction on Urban Shaman

"Readers who enjoy Karen Marie Moning's "Fever" series or Patricia Briggs's "Mercy Thompson" series will appreciate Joanne Walker's quest to master her powers while staying true to herself."
- Library Journal on Raven Calls

"Longtime fans will appreciate the return of Jo's 'staid and steady' ex-lover Mike Morrison, and all readers will enjoy the takedown of obstructionist and bureaucratic soldiers and CDC officials. There's enough backstory to engage newer readers, but returning readers will get the most out of the story."
-Publishers' Weekly on Mountain Echoes

"There are intriguing hints of previous stories, but enough detail to keep the reader grounded in the present. The relationships really carry the book, everything from Joanne's interactions with her partner and Morrison, to her dealings with her spirit guides. Her knack for finding herself in heaps of trouble, usually with an embarrassing side, make the book a true pleasure to read." -Examiner.com on Spirit Dances

"Murphy's fourth Walker Papers offering is another gripping, well-written tale of what must be the world's most reluctant -- and stubborn-- shaman. Joanne and her compatriots careen through a compelling and fast-paced story." - RT Book Reviews on Walking Dead

"This is the first book in a fascinating new series and, as usual, Murphy delivers interesting worldbuilding and magical systems, believable and sympathetic characters and a compelling story told at a breakneck pace. New and old fans of Murphy's work will find much to love about HEART OF STONE."-RT Book Reviews on Heart of Stone

I have waited impatiently for each of the nine main books in this series, and I have enjoyed very much watching Joanne develop from auto mechanic to power-filled shaman. This final book was excellent. Some authors end a series by lining up all the loose ends and tying them off one-by-one. Instead, this book had its own strong storyline as it gathered up many of the characters we met in earlier books and wove them into a terrific plot with many twists and turns, culminating in a wonderful sense of fulfillment and purpose (and incidentally tying up all the loose ends.)

When I got the email to say that Shaman Rises was on my kindle, I squealed with joy! I was so sad that one of my favourite series was ending but I knew it was going to go out on a bang. And boy!!! Did it! I laughed, I cried, I raged. I loved and hated. From the beginning to the end, I couldn't look away. This was an amazing end to an amazing series. READ IT!

Wow. A fitting end to the series. Dear reader, I did cry. Joanne Walker, reluctant shaman, rises to the occasion once again. C. E. Murphy provides a convenient timeline/synopsis of all the previous books, but as always, I recommend starting from the beginning, if you've missed the series.

Over the course of eleven books (two collections), Joanne Walker has gone from being a brassy, bossy mechanic to a powerhouse shaman comfortable with gods. She's had her world turned upside down and inside out and back again, fought everything from embarrassment to zombies, loved and lost and found. She's had to blend the Celtic and Cherokee blood and magic within her. Now the Devourer, the Soul-Eater, will confront Joanne on her home turf of Seattle, in the body.

Just read the series, if you haven't. Look up Murphy's Negotiator trilogy, if you haven't read that. Wait for whatever Murphy writes next, because she writes with humor, heart, and soul--and with the magic she writes about.

I've been reading this series since its start. It's one of my favorites, to the point where I tend to give the entire series a re-read before a new book comes out (and I also have all of the audiobook versions, too), so reading this book was a bittersweet experience for me since it is the official end of The Walker Papers where Joanne Walker is the primary character.

The series is about Joanne Walker, born Siobhan Grainne McNamarra Walkingstick, the daughter of an Irish woman and a Cherokee man, born in Ireland but given to her father to raise at the age of six months. We meet her for the first time in the book "Urban Shaman", living in Seattle and working as a police mechanic there. She's a woman with some serious issues regarding her parents and her life. Our introduction to her coincides with the apparent awakening of her shamanic nature while on an airplane returning from her mother's funeral in Ireland, and the series takes off from there. She starts off as a very reluctant shaman, and only takes on the mantle because the alternative is death. This is an urban fantasy series involving the Celtic and Native American mythic pantheons and various other aspects of the paranormal and magical world. It is set mainly in the Seattle Washington area, though there are forays to Ireland and North Carolina in later books. One thing I've always liked about this series is the wry sense of humor that underlines it. Horrific things happen to people along the way but it's leavened by the camaraderie between Joanne, her co-workers, and her friends.

For those of you who may not have ever read this series, the author provides a concise summary of the action in each of the previous books in the story arc so far, so if you are coming into it cold, you're brought up to speed story-wise.

The sound of Gary's voice, a little shaky reaches out to Joanne Walker (Siobhan Grainne MacNamarra Walkingstick) across the miles from Seattle,
"It's Annie, Jo. It's my wife. She's alive."
The last words of Book 8, Mountain Echoes (The Walker Papers) resound across time and space and you just know something huge is about to go down.
And it does!
Armageddon in Seattle? One shudders.
Who would have imagined the twists the Walker papers would encounter, that the story would end where it all began, and the pathway that Joanne Walker and her friends would travel, as we delved into the pages of that very first book.
A truly amazing journey, where gods, shamans, spirit animals and ordinary humans battle the darkness and destruction. Some surprising revelations, some heartfelt losses.
Joanne in her white leather hero coat, her wry sense of humour, the love of her life, her car Petite and the other love of her life, her man, the luscious stalwart Captain Morrison, along with other wonderful friends prepare for a final showdown with the Master.

I hate the ending of a series as it feels like losing a well known friend. That is the mark of a great author. To make you fall so in love w characters that they become real. Everything came full circle and It was the perfect time and the perfect way to end this story. Definitely worth the read. Gonna be corny and say fare thee well Joanne!
