About the Author

The need for cruising guides to the Caribbean Islands

Cruising Guide Publications was created by Simon and Nancy Scott while living aboard their sailboat in the British Virgin Islands, and later, working in the bareboat charter industry for twenty years. There was a need for comprehensive guides to aid cruisers and charterers exploring the Caribbean island chain. These guides include not only navigational information, but also the rich history of the Caribbean islands, folklore, the flora and fauna, as well as where to go for diving, snorkeling and shore side entertainment and of course, what to do in an emergency. We have made it our mission to answer all the questions we had from charterers and cruisers and to add details and background about the islands to enhance the cruising experience.

Collaborating with the cruising experts of the Caribbean

Twenty years ago, we teamed up with Chris Doyle, the popular cruising author of the Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands, Cruising Guide to the Leeward Islands, Cruising Guide to Trinidad, Tobago and Barbados, and the Cruising Guide to Venezuela and Bonaire.

Since then we allied ourselves with other cruising guide authors. Our rigorous guidelines require the authors to spend a considerable amount of time on location checking and rechecking details so that our readers have a safe, informed and therefore enjoyable cruise. Our authors have a dedication to details, and a love of sailing the islands they research.

Current cruising information for the Caribbean

Our guides are updated approximately every other year to make sure cruisers are armed with up-to-date information for their journey. This team of writers has contributed to our outstanding reputation as publishers of cruising guides. They have inspired many a cruiser to venture to new horizons with a greater sense of security and knowledge.

My wife and I bought this book to help plan our up coming trip to the BVI. The book is filled with great information about various harbors and at a high level, things to do and see while you're there. The aerial photos of the harbors and coves are very helpful in establishing entry points and marking reefs. Mooring and anchoring information is straightforward and helpful. My only complaint is that I wish there was more detail for restaurants, bars and the local attractions. Overall, this is was a great purchase and will be the first thing I pack for the trip.

If you are contemplating cruising around the USVI or BVI, this is a must-have. It gives you clear info on what bays/bights are available, what to expect, what ground holding is available. Well written with current photos, I would not take a vessel around with it. Fair winds - Twice cruiser to BVI.

It is possible to be packed like a sardine in a cruiseship, and have maybe half a day for one of the VI. that is one way to do it. Another way is to sail yourself. If you can do it, I highly recommend it. The Caribbean is calm, and really nice to sail. I do so love sailing. The VI are a great place to sail. This book gives some highlights, that are useful.

My sailing companions and I packed three different books for our BVI trip. This is the one that sat out on the chart table the most. An interesting factoid, the charter company supplied us with a fourth book that happened to be a copy of the previous edition.

I'm not sure exactly why this is the book we ended up reaching for. All I know for certain is that it was used the most.

Oh yeah - I think the book mentions this but I failed to appreciate the advice for getting to Tortola. Flying to St. Thomas appears smarter than flying in through San Juan. Also, Cape Air rocks.

Just returned from a trip using this. The anchorage descriptions were outstanding in every instance. Much weaker in shopping and dining directions.
