Overall I would say that this book tries to take on too much.

I was thrilled to lighten the load of this big book and use the slim reader instead. However, I found it extremely cumbersome to use. It required constant flipping page-to-page to find anything, with no easy way to find the index of chapter headings. Totally useless in the end - wish I had brought the book despite the extra weight.

The formatting through Kindle made it a pain to use. It seemed to be difficult to return to a section and that one always needed to revisit the table of contents. It was not user friendly like other travel books I have downloaded in the past for travel.

I've never "experienced" a lonely planet travel guide until I read one on Kaua'i, but since I used that one I've been enamored with them. With the highlights, itineraries, "Month by Month" guide, and the maps I found it to be an impressive, enjoyable experience. One thing I noticed that was different from other guides was that comparatively speaking, the layout seemed less cluttered and frantic than some others I've purchased. I must admit I'm quite partial to photographs, but aside from the ones in the front and such things as the 3-D visual of the Red Fort, this book is quite sparse in this department. This book is a full two inches deep and that will give you an idea of how packed it is with information.

The fore edge of the book is color-coded in blue for quick reference. I was able to quickly open the book to Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana & Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir (including Ladkh), Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh & the Taj Mahal, Uttarakhand, Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal & Darjeeling, Sikkim, Northeast States, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Mumbai (Bombay), Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka & Bengaluru, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu & Chennai, Tamil Nadu & Chennai, and lastly an abbreviated history. This aspect makes comparisons doable because the setup of each area is simple. Each one has a brief overview, generalized map of the area, sights, where you can eat, the drinking & nightlife, entertainment, places to shop, spas & activities, etc.

Once again, I do miss those photographs, but there are many other guidebooks and books to explore. The introductory material will be an excellent help for those people who aren't exactly decisive. The setup makes it a little easier to make decisions prior to heading out.

I've worked with a lot of software programmers from India, and have learned bits and pieces about the culture over time. This book provides me with a wealth of information in some ways more so than if I read detailed history books on the subject. Not to mention all the other fun facts. The book is a little light on photographs for being over 1200 pages, I like some of these guides that give many inviting pictures of the territory they discuss. The maps provided lack a lot of detail as well, but then that stuff can be fixed when you get there, or by using an updated GPS. One interesting facet of these Lonely Planet series books in the Itinerary sections. This book has six month, three month, one month and many variants of plotted tours around the country. I would invite other reviewers who have used this book to tell us how accurate they are in predicting the time needed. They do however, provide at least a reasonable guide for the traveler to plan with. Some of my past trips have to places in the US or Canada, have been off by quite a bit. This is mostly due to the delay in making the decisions on where to go. Even a small place like Vancouver, BC, I spent 3 years there off an on going to school, and having some significant free time during breaks and on weekends, yet I doubt I covered five percent of what was there to see!

There are a lot of small discussions of past Indian history in this book. For instance, most of us know this was once a British colony, for some years it was very stable. There was a bloody uprising in the 1800's that I'd seen in a movie once. In the movie, I may have missed it but I never caught the real reason for the uprising.

I am a huge Lonely Planet fan. I have used most of the Asian editions. This travel guide you need to keep close to you, I mean buy the actual printed edition, not the ebook, since you'll be using it allot in the field, so much information. Thanks...Again.

My husband and I bought this book in preparation for our month long trip to India. We were terribly disappointed to discover that maps were duplicated and missing, information was misplaced (and subsequently found in completely random sections), links (to table of contents, chapters, etc) within the book were not correct and the formatting would change and skip around so that some information would be lost. I am really disappointed with Lonely Planet's e-version of their book.

This book is huge at almost 1,250 pages. I’ve used dozens of Lonely Planet guides but none have been this big. It’s packed with information. I suppose the guide is relative to the size and culture of India! The problem is because it’s so big it’s not easy to tote around. It’s about three times the usual size of most Lonely Planet guides. I was pleased to see that this particular guide was on non-glossy paper so there wasn’t a glare problem that I’ve experienced with some Lonely Planet books. Uncharacteristically there are few pictures in “India”. I suppose that is because it’s already so large. There is however, the usual wealth of information on sights, websites, hotels, shopping, etc. This would be a great guide to go through in order to decide what part of India you’d like to concentrate on seeing on your trip.
