As one of those people who research everything before going there or making a purchase, this book is indispensible to Camino pilgrims. This guide is a not a step-by-step what-to-expect guide like the Brierley book (also indispensible, but for the step-by-step feature), but gives clear, practical advice on what to bring, weather, Camino etiquette, statistics, etc. The section on Camino and Spanish history is particularly fascinating because knowing how it evolved gives a better understanding on why it is there and how to make the experience the best for you. As someone whose Spanish is limited to what I've heard on TV - hola, adios, hast luego - this book also gives practical phrases in Spanish and Basque, as well as menu tips on different parts of the Camino.

I encourage everyone planning on walking "The Way" to read this book before you go!

I walked Camino early this year with my husband and found the information in this book easy to help with getting there and after the walk. It helped with budget and ideas of clothes and weight. Most of all I found out that at 70 years of age I did not need to carry a heavy pack.

Very helpful and as it says practical information for preparing for the pilgrimage. Gives information on various starting points, how to find services and some guidance on the Camino culture. Also gives historical context. I will be taking this along with John Brierley's guide on my journey.
I have read multiple individual accounts and guides. I should have started with this one. It helped tremendously in pulling together my priorities for this trip

A very thorough guide for first timers preparing to go on the Camino. The text is enlivened here & there with samples of the author's wit. I liked it.

Hope I have the exact quote - easier to find in a print edition even though I did highlight it. This is an example of the author's wit mentioned by another reviewer. His description of some meals, such as over-boiled pasta smothered in jar sauce, elicited that remark.

Yes, there are some typos but he asks for people to let him know as corrections can be easily made in self-published books. That said, the wealth of information is outstanding. He doesn't just recommend something, he explains why. So many links and info on how to get to the starting point, as well as other towns. Descriptions of how the walk would have been for early pilgrims, historical information, and pages of Spanish words and phrases to ease the language barrier barely scratch the surface of what you get. With 146 or so pages at less than six bucks for print or less than five for digital, I can't see how any prospective pilgrim wouldn't benefit tremendously. Fantastic value and a must-have.

This was an interesting read but not a definitive guide to the Camino de Santiago. There were numerous spelling, grammar and word usage mistakes, which even my untrained eye caught. It needs much better proof reading. However, the section on the history of the Camino and the history of Spain are interesting and much more thorough than most of the guides I've read. Just one question remains- what's with recommending cotton socks? Everything I've read says to avoid them like the plague. They absorb moisture but don't wick it away from the skin. Damp socks + boots/shoes rubbing for miles can = blisters. Wool and/or synthetic socks are recommended.
