This guide book (2007) is a really good planning tool for a trip to Cuba. It has lots of photos and great schematic drawings of important buildings and plazas.
If you are taking a tour package where you are not having to choose accomodation yourself or deal with transport logistics, I would probably take it with me. However, for the traveller who is making all their own decisions and reservations, I would take either Lonely Planet (new edition Fall 09) or the Moon Handbook (06). using the DK just for planning then leaving it at home. DK has minimalhotel recommendations - just the chain hotels, and sketchy restaurant selections. The Moon Handbook has really extensive background information on Cuba, but weighs almost twice as much as Lonely Planet.

I've bought DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for a number of countries I visited in the past so I didn't hesitate to buy the same brand for our upcoming trip to Cuba. I was very disappointed in this book. It's many fewer pages than other DK guides and that was reflected in the brief mention of so many places and things about Cuba. Even though I haven't been to Cuba yet, I knew about a number of places to visit that weren't mentioned in this guide. It's really a very superficial overview, leaving us to frequently say "but tell us more about that..." You also should know that the guide comes from England, a country where residents are free to travel to Cuba without restrictions. As an American with restrictions, I found that some of what was written wasn't relevant.

The DK series is good for a visual guide to a city or country. It supplements other guides which provide more specific written information. The DK Cuba book did have pictures of places in Cuba but the pictures in this particular book were not as good at giving me a sense of the place. The pictures were small and this sacrificed some of the quality of the photographs.

This is agreat book if you've visted Cuba or not. The photos of historical sites are great. The historical references are varied and truthful, based on my study of Cuba. I first got this book on loan from a library; after reading it, I knew I needed my own personal copy.

There's not a lot of books for Americans to read before going to Cuba. This one provides pictures and descriptions of areas to visit. It has been a great help and allows me to learn more from my itinerary to Cuba before travelling!

There's a lot of great content in this book, and the pictures are great too (and there are many of them). I haven't had the chance to check its accuracy yet (not yet been to Cuba). One drawback -- the grammar/vocab is a bit odd; the author is pretty clearly not *quite* 100% fluent in English. It's not a huge deal but it might be worthwhile to read the "Look Inside" pages to see if this writing style is okay for you (especially for the full price).
