They seem to make these wonderful easy to use gems that help you get the best of your travel situation.

You may not be able to speak and understand the language but the phrasebook should be able to help you understand the things you must know.

The small size means it'll fit into most pockets and its light weight means you'll always have it with you.

The size of this Lonely Planet Spanish Phrasebook & Dictionary is perfect for going along with you in purse or pocket when travelling or sight-seeing--the length and width are less than the size of a 4x6" photograph and it is just over 1/2" thick.

The book is color coded and text labeled on the outer edges of its pages by categories like Food, Travel, Social, Practical and Basics. The larger categories are then broken down further into things like asking for directions, or getting a hotel room or finding transportation. This makes it easy (once you have used it a bit) to flip directly to the part of the book you need in the moment.

Some of its features:

A clear and easy to read table of contents.

Lots of great tips and phrases to memorize that you'll need right away.

A basic explanation of the Spanish language, including pronunciation of the alphabet and a grammar lesson.

A menu decoder to help you understand some of the Spanish words you'll see on restaurant menus.

A limited English to Spanish and Spanish to English Dictionary.

Given the size of a full Spanish/English dictionary, it is obvious that it would not be possible to include EVERY WORD in a book this tiny. As a result, I find the dictionary to be the weakest component (by far) of this otherwise-useful book. I have not travelled with the phrasebook yet, but I volunteer at a preschool that has a predominantly Latino demographic, and I hoped to be able to use it to help me increase my Spanish vocabulary. Unfortunately, every time I have looked up something I needed to say in SPanish...or something a child said to me in Spanish that I needed to translate, the dictionary was of no use because those words were not included.

The ability to understand and speak basic Spanish is very important in the western United States; It's useful not only at one's workplace but also when interacting with the increasing Spanish speaking populations. This Lonely Planet Spanish Phrasebook really comes in handy when traveling or just for routine referencing!

Likes:
>A mini, pocket sized book that provides fast, basic reference to commonly used Spanish words and phrases.
>Geared towards travelers, this book is neatly organized into relevant sections such as Practical, Social, Safe Travel, and Food, etc. for fast reference.
>Good refresher course with a short section on pronunciation and grammar for those who took Spanish classes before (many years ago for me).
>There's even a Menu Decoder and a Quick Reference Two-Way Dictionary with 3500 words.
>Lonely Planet provides a good selection of language reference books for travel; from the Fast Talk series (96 pages), the Phrasebooks (272 pages), to the Small Talk series which covers 10 languages per book for specific regions (128 pages). There are also audio products such as Book & CD, Mobile Apps, and eBooks depending on individual traveler's requirements.

Dislikes:
>This edition covers generalized, "World" Spanish, rather than for a specific region such as Mexico, Europe, or Latin America, etc. Lonely Planet does offer other editions such as Mexican Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, Latin American Spanish, etc.
>Some phrases are not compatible in So. Cal.; no one here says "Donde estan los servicios (where are the restrooms)?"; it's commonly "Donde esta el baño?"; I've never heard folks here say, "Que guay (how cool)!", it's usually "Que suave" or "Que fresco".

The Lonely Planet Spanish Phrasebook & Dictionary is a handy, compact guide for travelers to Spain. At 5-1/2" by 3-3/4" by 1/2", it's the portable size you'd expect from a phrasebook (or slightly larger). The book does seem to reflect the Lonely Planet approach to travel - it seems to assume you're going to spend some time in one country, so it goes into more detail than the casual traveler may need. (So something even more abbreviated may be better for a quick trip.)

For the most part, they did a good job with the selection of what's in the book and how it's organized. The colored page edges help find things, once you're a little bit familiar with them. The main body of the book has a well-organized series of sections for various needs. The last 75 pages of the book have a menu decoder; an English to Spanish dictionary; and a Spanish to English dictionary.

Putting grammar at the beginning seems a waste, though. I'm all for learning some grammar, but I don't think that's where you start. (In fact, I think the best way to start learning a language is with no book at all - see below.) But again, they seem to be going for a little more depth than usual in this book, on the assumption you'll be in the country for a while. Still, a selection of more of the most useful phrases (there are a few there) would be a better use of the first section of the book.

OPEN IT BEFORE YOU NEED IT: You can't really expect to carry a phrase book and open it to find the right phrase just as your taxi is hurtling past your destination. You'll have a lot better luck if you spend a little time on the plane or before you leave with the book. Practice a little, so you don't stumble so badly with pronunciation.
