About the Author
After a stint in the Marine Corps, DAN EMMETT joined the United States Secret Service, serving on the elite Counter Assault Team before being selected for the most coveted of all assignments in the Secret Service, the Presidential Protective Division. After 21 years as an agent, Emmett retired from the Secret Service and joined the CIA for six more years. Today, the author is an adjunct professor as well as a security consultant for both private industry and the United States Government.
Everybody is talking about the Clinton stuff but this book is really about a man who loves his country, looking for a life based on honor and discipline, first in the Marine Corps, then in various kinds of Secret Service work. Good stuff about training, sacrifice, and brotherhood in here. Emmett comes off as an old-fashioned American patriot, and he is not shy about expressing his admiration for politicians on both sides of the aisle. Ted Kennedy comes off as a class act, who treats his Secret Service detail with great respect. Indeed, the story of Dan touring JFK's old house was one of the most moving parts of the book for me.

I enjoyed reading Within Arm's Length, but there were places in the book that did not follow a story, but were long narratives about the extensive training. At best it makes me realize the difficulty that prospective service people must endure, but reading about it over and above the point once made becomes tedious. I almost feel guilty making any kind of a negative statement but that's how I was made to feel while reading this book. However I came away from it with a whole new prospective of respect for the agents who protect the President, and also for CIA agents.

Very well written, very easy to follow. Would have enjoyed a little more information on the interaction of the Secret Service and the President, plus a little more on the personal life. Didn't really go into much of the famils.

This book was not a White House tell all tale. The agent in a conversational way his experiences as if you were seated across the table hearing how he trained for the postion of Secret Service agent. The writer reveals the day to day life of an agent assigned to protecting the President of the United States of America. The world is dangerous place and the President and his family are under constant protection of the Secret Service.
I enjoyed the book since didn't reveal the relationship of the agent and those he was assigned to protect. This was an easy read.

Mr. Emmett gives a rare inside look at not only what a Secret Service agent does, but what it takes to serve in that position. Once I picked it up I was enthralled! I couldn't put it down til finished.

From start to finish, Emmett demonstrates what it is really like to be a Secret Service agent. This is an excellent biography that is very well written.

My relative is a Secret Service Agent so I found this interesting to read. Gave me insight and found the President's behind the scene antics shocking. What happens behind closed doors..etc.

When I lived in Severna Park MD, my neighbor was VP Al Gores driver. He traveled all the time, and I would fix his kids flat tires on their bikes. We became acquainted and he was greatful. So one night walking my german shepherd I see this big limo in his driveway. I knew it was the VP's car, so I went up to it and gave it a good shake. I was leaning on the bumper when he came out of the house in his boxers and service pistol. We laughed our asses off as he tells me of all the guys I just awakened. This agent made huge sacrifices, and we as a nation should be damm glad for it. Thanks Mr Emmett, you earned your pay.
