We spent a few days at the Grand Canyon and this guide was of little use to us. Just an example: We decided to go to the skywalk on the western side of the canyon. As we realized later, the guide seemed to intentionally omit important info that would probably have deterred us from going to the skywalk. The guide did not warn that there would be about 10 miles of unpaved road (we had to breath in a lot of dust from cars in front of us) Further, once we got there, we had to leave our car and were charged $45.00 per person to be taken by bus (7 minute drive) to the location where the skywalk is. In addition, we had to pay $32.00 per person to stand on the skywalk. While we could not take pictures, the short stay on the walk was totally spoiled by the personnel taking pictures of visitors ($30.00 per picture). The experience was not worth the time and money it took--this commercial enterprise partly benefits the Hualapai reservation where the skywalk is located. This may explain the omission. However, a good guide is supposed to help travellers make the best use of time and money. If the omission was not intentional, it is possible that the authors never went to the skywalk, so had little to say about it. I do not recommend this guide.

...anyplace on the planet.

When I worked in a travel-related organization a few years ago, Lonely Planet guides were our internal standard for how we wanted our own content to appear to our clients: painstakingly researched, abundantly detailed and correctly presented.

This guide does exactly that for the Grand Canyon, with additional materials addressing many adjacent areas (including Flagstaff, Sedona, Lake Mead and Las Vegas) that are the principle staging points for visitors to both the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon.

While those headed off on more challenging Grand Canyon hikes will still need detailed maps for their routes, this guide is an excellently researched compendium of planning information that covers everything from when to travel to lodging options to more than 40 different hiking options that fit within itineraries lasting from half a day to a week or longer.

As a veteran of multiple Grand Canyon trips in different seasons, I don't have a single quibble with any of the advice offered in this book (in fact, it is probably more objective about some aspects of Grand Canyon development and tourism than I would be myself; kudos to the authors for keeping their opinions in reserve).

Whether you are going to the Grand Canyon for the first time or returning to find new vistas, the Lonely Planet Grand Canyon guide can easily serve as your one-stop reference for planning your trip.

As a supplement to the technical planning for your Grand Canyon visit, you might also consider some historical reading on its exploration:

What makes you buy one of these guides? You want a compact, all-in-one guide as a resource. That means I want serious details and great reviews and a great experience. Not easy to do when you have a very diverse clientale from elderly to young and fit. So how long will that hike take me? How difficult? Is there a water source? How much money to park? Where can I park? What sort of experience will I have? More and more, I can't turn to this sort of guide to give me these complete answers, so I turn to the interenet and specialized reviews. Having said all of that! I do think that this guide is a good start.

We are planning a trip to this area in the near future and these books by lonely planet are invaluable at saving time and money in helping plan for the perfect vacation experience. While it is true you could find some of the information that is in these books online it would take days and days of research if not weeks to compile it and then edit what is factual and what is not helpful at all.

The lonely planet people have been there and know what they are doing and know what you are looking for and how to help you find what you are looking for even if you dont have a clue what you are looking for at the moment. Get the book and make a plan.

Now when you arrive at your destination like the other lonely planet books I have used on our trips, they just help you get around. And even more important sometimes lets you know some of the places to avoid.

Just a side note, wouldn't it be great if trip advisor did a series of books.

As always if you have any questions ask me.

This is an excellent resource and starting point for any trip to the Grand Canyon. At a quick glance, it isn't a glossy or particularly attractive guide, only having color pictures in the first 20 pages or so. But we already know the Grand Canyon is going to be glorious so this isn't to reaffirm that. Instead of pictures we get small maps and figures to convey information about what there is to do and the best times to do it.

The guide opens up with a top-20 things to do, then suggests itineraries for half-day to week long trips on the North or South Rim. I appreciate the several pages addressing enjoying the canyon with children. Beyond that, they have detailed information various places to stay, eat, and (most importantly) hike. You'll have to go to the internet if you want opinions on the various places; although the guide describes them well, you don't get a feel for what is run down or if staff are polite.

There are more pages than I expected about Las Vegas and other surrounding communities. Sedona makes sense to me as it is nearby and has a character that most visiting the Grand Canyon would appreciate. But Las Vegas (20 pages) seems a bit out of place. That said, many will be flying in and out of Las Vegas, so perhaps it makes sense.

The book is a good size that you won't mind carrying it around and taking notes you can later look up with more detail on the internet. It has a good balance between being detailed but reasonable in size and length. It is four stars instead of five because it is a bit dreary to look at and sometimes loses focus from the Grand Canyon.
