I confess I have been a nearly lifelong fan of H. L. Mencken, so I am a bit biased, especially since I first read his three "Days" biographies when I was in High School, when they were published by Alfred Knopf, in three very nicely bound volumes (which are no longer available unless you are very lucky with a second hand purchase.)

This release earns an extra credit star because all three works are in a single handy volume, with the additional 200 pages of notes, never before published.

Therefore, I can dedicate this review entirely to the 200 pages of added notes. In a word, their content is fabulous, and it appears every word is from Mencken's hand The format of the notes is not to the scholar's taste, but it is more than appropriate for the casual reader, as long as you keep one of the two bound in bookmarks in the page where you last read a note, and you keep an eye out for the unobtrusive asterisks on the outer margins. You must be reasonably careful because sometimes there are two notes to one page. The notes in the back are identified by the word or phrase on which the note is made.

And the notes are detailed and informative. I discovered something new when I read that women virtually never went to hospitals. All their births were done at home, and almost all surgical procedures were done at home, when Mencken was born around 1880, and this was in the shadow of the great The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

A few years ago, I searched long and hard for the three volumes. No one ever need do that search again.

Interesting autobiography of one of America's stellar journalists and cultural critics.
