Just in time for Pope Francis to canonize Saint John Paul II on 27 April 2014, we have a new book on the saint by popular Catholic youth speaker Jason Evert. Evert, Jesuit-educated at Brophy Prep, has made a career with his wife Crystalina as a popular fixture on the Catholic youth and young adult speaking circuit. Speaking in the U.S. and beyond, they emphasize the value of chastity and of saving oneself until marriage, frequently citing their inspiration from JPII's theology of the body. As such, it's highly appropriate that this new book focuses on the "five loves" of a pope who focused a good part of his ministry on recovering a self-sacrificing notion of human love for the public square. This is a reverential book written with style and humor in an accessible, non-technical style. If you've read Evert's other books on sexuality and relationships, you'll know what to expect here, but there's a more warmly personal focus in this book on the pope whose love for humanity inspired so many. If you want uplifting spiritual reading for Easter, I highly recommend this paperback book as a simple love letter to the "pope of the young" whom so many of us still recall with deep affection.

I am loving this book! Granted, I am only halfway through, but I am taking my time to savor it.
The book is not only inspiring, it's also extremely entertaining and accessible. It's filled with a continual stream of anecdotes and stories that I somehow never knew. And whether John Paul II already holds a special place in your heart, or you are just discovering him, Evert draws you in with a moving and powerful journey through this saint's incredible life and into his heart.
I think my favorite thing about this book existing is that it may open up a whole new generation of Catholic teenagers to the awesome witness of JPII. The high school freshman of today were 5-6 years old when John Paul the Great died, and many of them may not care about this man at all. I know Jason Evert has a large following among young Catholics today, and my hope is that they will pick up this easy read and be inspired by JPII's epic life, charming personality, and heroic virtue.
I highly recommend people of all ages to read it, to commemorate the canonization this month. You will not be disappointed!

Those of us who cherished Pope John Paul II knew that he was a great man, whom we not only admired, but loved. We knew that he was a saint and would one day be declared so officially by the Catholic Church. His successor wisely waived the five year waiting period for opening the cause for canonization, and just nine years after his death, on the feast of Divine Mercy in April 27, 2014, he was canonized.
In Saint John Paul the Great: His Five Loves, author Jason Evert tells us just who this great man was and why we loved him so much, by presenting both his biography (which covers nearly the first half of the book) and the five great loves of his life and his pontificate (which are contained in the second half of the book). Evert writes in a clear, comprehensible manner and I found this book easy to read. However, I did not read this book quickly, as I wanted to savor the stories about this dear man and great saint. This book was engaging and very hard to put down.
While the first part of this book was very interesting and brought back fond memories, I already knew much of Pope John Paul II’s life story; however, the chapters that detailed his loves (young people, human love, the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary, and the Cross) presented new information that strongly reaffirmed my belief that he was truly an exceptional man and brilliant leader of the Church. I was captivated by the many anecdotes and personal remembrances revealed by cardinals, bishops, and others whom Evert interviewed for the book.
Here are some highlights of the book that will be new to many of us:
