There is a bit of a time lapse with this sequel to Silence, beginning a few years after the last ended.  Oakley has definitely changed as a character, relearning herself now that her secrets are known and she is speaking once again.  This sequel is less young adult and more new adult now, as neither of them are teenagers anymore.

Hands down, what I liked the most about this book was the fact that Oakley finally has the family she deserves.  Her brother Jasper has always been there for her, but now her mother is, too.  That was also the downside for  me, the fact that her mother whisked her away to live in Australia.  While I understood the mother's instinct to take your child away from all that was wrong, to protect her from the inevitable media storm, I felt for Oakley.  I felt like her mother  took her from the person she needed most, Cole, the person who had been there for her more than anyone else.

The central focus of this book was the trial and all of the emotional baggage that comes with that.  It seemed that Oakley was still learning how to live again and was still a bit socially awkward and nervous, something I feel is absolutely normal.  There is also the struggle between Cole and Oakley as they had to rediscover each other.  Some of that was due to their time apart, but just as much had to do with the fact that Oakley now communicates.

What I loved most was the message... the idea that you can persevere, that you can choose to be survivor instead of a victim.  It was a powerful message and an important one.

Things to love about Broken Silence...

--Oakley's strength.  I love the messages of strength and courage that her story sends.
--The realistic portrayal.  It is tough subject matter and I love how it was handled, no sanitizing it.

Things I wanted more or less of...

--More nice Cole.  Towards the end of the last book and at various points in this one, I felt like he was bordering on jerkdom.  While I understand that as a person, he had feelings and emotions in regards to all that happened in the story, I felt like he didn't have the understanding for the horror that Oakley went through and the inevitable issues that kind of thing creates.

    Some quotastic goodness...

--Everyone says that getting over somebody ‘just takes time’ and that one day it will stop hurting and the door will open for you to move on. We are also told that love is eternal; something extraordinary that will stay with you forever. However, after a break up, suddenly love becomes something you should get over once a little time had passed. The contradiction is immense (Loc. 22-24).

--There had been no one else because I couldn’t stand the thought of being that close to anyone else. There was nothing wrong with the guys here or anything, I just didn’t feel safe and secure with them. They couldn’t make me forget every disgusting thing that had happened to me with one little smile (Loc. 140-142).

My recommendation:  A dark, but beautiful and emotional read that I felt was very moving!

    Emotional

This is an emotional story. With the support of family, friends, and a strong love one can conquer their past. This isnot your typical romance yet it is a powerful moving story. One were good conquers evil and strong love triumphs. There are sick people in the world we live in, the past breaks your heart but the ability to overcome it all warms your soul.

    Great book!!

I read both books in less then 24 hours. Once I started reading Silence I couldn't put it down. I had to read the second book because I had to know what happened after. OMG best books. Gripping. Heartfelt. It was like being right there with them. Only down fall to Broken Silence was there were several pages that the words were blanked out. Defintly recommend both books.

    Disappointed

I read both 'Silent' and 'Broken Silece'. The content/story line was good, however, I was sadly surprised by how poorly written it was. The transitions are virtually non-existant. I think of it as "reader whiplash" when things happen left and right without any transition. Some pretty big events happen in both books that seem to warrent more description or detail. Everything just seemed so topical and not "full bodied". It almost felt like the writer wasn't fully committed to writing this story--she could have taken her reader so much deeper into the situational aspects of the story and could have made her characters so much "richer". Again, we only know these characters topically. Furthermore, in both books, I was left with the impression that the author couldn't wait to get to the end of her own story. The endings are abrupt and seemed to just "fall off" the page. This story line had so much potential; unfortunately for this author, HOW she told the story was disappointing.

200 pages, second of three, cost $1.99. Poorly edited.

This 200 page book is the segual to "SILENCE". It cost &1.99 and the editing is better than "SILENCE", but not by much. This is supposed to be a YA book, but the themes are geared more to adults, than young people. There is cursing, (f#@k fequently) sex, more sex talk, a focus on pediophilia and subsquent trails, unmarried pregnancy and underage drinking. Some mild violence. This book was interesting and a fast read. It took place four years after the first book. I will not say ended, because there was no conclusion what so ever. This one has a few loose threads, but there was a conclusion, ldid not care for. There is a third book currently released which stars, the brother, Jasper, as the main character. I would let a 17 and perhaps a mature 16 year old read this book. I am not sure about anyone younger.

    Broken Silence

This a great book. Silence was heart warming and sad at the same time. Okaly has to move to the other side of the world away from her past and no see Cole for 4 years. I would hate to be away from my boyfriend for 4 years. Cole ad Okaly had so many great memories together then when Okaly comes back its hard for them to feel the same way they did before the had felt before. Broken Silence wa hard for Okaly to go through the court thing ajd her seeing her dad agian and her passing out good thing she had Linda and then Cole got thrown in jail i know it ws for no reason but both Okaly and Cole were comfortabble doing it but Linda got him out of it. I wish i had older brother like Jasper he ws so protective around vher and made sure she was okay and nothing bad happend to her same with Cole.I loved both books i recommend you to read them both and i hope she comes out with another one i ws just a little confused at the end....

This series had me crying and laghing the whole time and trust me, im definatly not the emotional type. I loved how the author wrote this book and the one before it without sugar coating it. Iys one the best books i have ever read and the only series that has ever made me cry. I highly recomend this book and the one before it they are some of the best books you will wver read. And dont pay attention to the snobby jerks who say the book is bad because of gramer errors they are definatly lying

A Thought Provoking Must Read :

Its been a few weeks since I read the book, but I still wanted to share how much the book touched me. Its an amazing read - well written, well plotted, and believable characters. But most of all the situation Oakley dealt with for most of her life unfortunately happens to many young people today. This is a book that kind of makes you thankful for your own life and problems, yet also makes you ask yourself how I help make the world or even someone's life better. You won't be disappointed in reading these books - part 1 & part 2.

    Loved it

JUSTICE IS SERVED! Oakley starts living a normal life. The trial ended just the way kt was supposed to. I was gwtting scared a little bit when Cole got arrested. It was soooo cute when Oakley found out she was pregnant. Cole said "oh crap....im gonna be a dad!" It was so so cute. Im nore than likely not going to read the book about Oakleys older brother. Although natasha needs to right another book with oakley and cole. Maybe something ks wrong with the baby. Overall i like the sequal

    The Silence Series!!!!!

This book was amazing. The author ( Natasha Preston ) created a complex plot that made the story feel even more realistic than it already was. Romance, sadness, leaving the past where it belongs, joy, and new begginings take place in this book with a whole lot of cliff hangers ( especially the end ) creating a fantastic book you can't put down.

P.S. Please create a third book for this series!!!!! It was an amazing read, both books were, but the ending leaves you wanting to know more about what happens to Oakley and Cole and now their child and if Miles and her mom marry and maybe even what happens to frank after ten years and ali or mia finally getting married to somebody and Oakley and Cole's wedding! Please, if you already haven't, consider making a third book for the Oakley and Cole series!

P.P.S. You're a really skilled and great author, your books are page turners! Keep writing!

    Amazing

This book was one of th best i have ever read. Yes their are typos and there are pages blocked out but u can find them onkine. But the fact that thios book so acuratly describes what it feels like to be betrayed by your father makes up for it. As a victom to sexual abuse, i am able to re!ate to this book and am inspird by the journey Oakley goes through. This book describes acueatly all the feelings of confusion and doubt that a victom goes through. I highly reommend this ook.
