I was amused by Dagmar. Her cousin's a jerk, but her way of getting out of Denmark was imaginative. I also enjoyed the slow growth of attraction between Leo and Dagmar as they traveled back to London and got used to one another. Katie MacAlister is quickly becoming a go-to favorite for an enjoyable historical.

THE TRUTH ABOUT LEO by Katie MacAlister is a brand-new Regency Historical romance. #4 in the "Noble" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Witty, a bit of danger, lots of sensuality, with the right mixture of adventure and romance. This story will have you turning pages. Mayhem, humor and fun, what can go wrong? To be honest, if you are looking for suspense, you won't find it here, but if you are looking for an enjoyable read with memorable characters then you are in the right place. The secondary characters are engaging as well as the main characters. They have a bit of a sideline story going on as well. An enjoyable read! Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Katie MacAlister is back, and I honestly couldn’t be happier! I’ve always loved her trademark witty humor and her colorful cast of characters, so I was delighted to find that she was releasing another historical in her Noble series. I will admit, that I may be a bit of a MacAlister fan girl (it was her books that got me back into reading after all) but I think that she is an amazingly talented lady. The Noble series has always been my favorite of her books, so I’ve eagerly anticipated this fourth installment for some time now. I am exceedingly pleased to report that The Truth About Leo has definitely lived up to my expectations and it was so much fun to read!

We start out the book with Princess Dagmar (or her Serene Highness as she likes to be called) in a bit of a pickle, but that doesn’t keep the ever resourceful Princess down for very long. She jumps at the opportunity presented to her in marrying our injured hero, Leopold Ernest George Mortimer the seventh Earl of March, and quite quickly setting course for England. There these two embark on a thoroughly entertaining journey of intrigue and mystery that will keep you guessing as to what is going to happen with this couple next. I was pleased that Katie brought back the majority of the characters from the previous books in this series, so that we may catch a glimpse as to where they have gone since we last parted. As all of Katie’s heroines are known to do, the Princess stole the show for me. I just loved Dagmar (even if she does have an unappealing name). She is a resourceful woman, and I found her to be beyond funny. She has wit, intelligence, and a forthright manner of speaking that you just can’t help but love. On the flip side though, I wish we got to know Leo a bit more, but I did enjoy what little we got to know of him. Overall, The Truth About Leo was pleasure to read. If you enjoy well written stories with light-hearted humor in your romance and engaging plots, then I couldn’t suggest Katie more strongly as a great author for you to read. I’m definitely looking forward to what Katie has in store for us next.

Recycled Characters

I am a big fan of her writing. Big fan. But this one was meh. I like her quirky heroines. But whether this book was poorly visioned, or whether I'd read too many of her books back-to-back, I really didn't like it. It was very formulaic.

Quirky heroine with running amok of the mouth? Check
Staid and stolid hero who is flummoxed by quirky heroine and falls in love with her despite the insanity? Check
Completely unconventional butler? Check
Madcap group of friends? Check
Animals in bizarre types or amounts? Check
Reference to manual on connubial calisthenics? Check

So once you strip the book of all the usual and you look at the core of this book, it's all about who killed Algernon Hayes. And here's where it utterly failed. There were factual conflicts between what was said early in the book and what later happened at the climax. So I give it a 2/5. It was just meh.

This book is about a spy who gets left for dead, a destitute Princess (Dagmar) and her companion. Dagmar and Julia have to leave Copenhagen, so that Dagmar does not end up in a convent, so they have to find a way to get passage on a ship to England without any money.  The only way is for Dagmar to marry an officer/sailor, so that they will have free passage.  So luckily Julia, Dagmars companion finds Leo injured in the Princess's back garden, they bring him in but the doctor declares that he will not live, so Dagmar sees their ticket to freedom by marrying Leo before he dies.  




However, Dagmar tends to Leo so thoroughly that he lives and this is their story of how they found love, deception and murder!

Many years ago, my sister discovered an author who had just started a great new romantic vampire series, not something very mainstream at the time. However, I fell in love with the writing style, and promptly starting looking for everything I could get my hands on by the author. Included were a couple of stand alone contemporary stories and a regency series. My sister is a HUGE historical romance fan, me not so much. However, it didn't take much nagging for me to give them a try.

They were wonderful. I couldn't believe how funny they were against others of that genre that I had read. I was disappointed when the series never went any further that book 3, The Trouble with Harry. Which was my abso-favorite of the series, and one that up until very recently still resided on my keeper shelf. (Another sister stole it. I can't prove it, but I know!)  Needless to say, when I saw this book while skimming through Netgalley, I couldn't believe it. Finally, another book after 10 years?! I felt incredibly lucky to be given a chance at an early read. If you haven't read the first 3 books, it really isn't necessary. The other couples make appearances, but years and years have past and their stories aren't crucial to the story line for this book.

We are first introduced to Leo as he is rescuing a young girls cat from a tree. He has recently been on a spy mission in Russia and is making a brief stop in Denmark before moving on. Leo ends up passed out in Dagmar's back yard with a saber wound after escaping 2 soldiers trying to detain him after his horse ran off and left him stranded following a confrontation with said cat.

At first Dagmar, thinks Leo is passed out drunk, and instructs her companion to just leave him be. It's not until a less than helpful meeting with her crown prince cousin and the admiral for the British navel fleet convince her that drastic measure must be taken if she is to escape life in a french convent. To get passage to England, she must be married to a British officer. Leo's feverish ramblings convince her he is an Army Officer and gains her the leverage needed to get out of Denmark, hauling a near death Leo with her. It's not till weeks later, when his fever finally breaks and he is well on his way back to England that he finds out he is married... to a princess.

Dagmar is half English, half German, all pushy female. I absolutely adored how she just went around doing what she wanted and making up the rules to suit her needs. She never maneuvers maliciously, after all that's not princess-ly behavior. But in the end, she confounds, confuddles and confuses people into doing it her way. She was a unique character and her interactions with Leo were witty and wonderful. I enjoyed their story and getting to see what was up with the other couples.  I gave this 3 stars.

A light-hearted, sweet, and fun read, The Truth About Leo was a wonderful historical romance. I really liked this book. It was entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.

Dagmar was a good heroine. She refused to let anyone, even the king of Denmark, tell her what to do with her life and she was clever (or perhaps impulsive) enough to figure a way out. She was a likable heroine and I thought she was great.

Leo was a total sweetie. He was the definition of a gentleman, totally adorable, and utterly endearing. I really liked him. I thought he was perfect.

The romance was lovely. Dagmar and Leo were great together and I liked how they both didn't bother to hide their feelings for each other. And, the chemistry between them was hot, considering how they both could keep their hands off each other (or, at least, couldn't stop thinking about it). I thought they were great together.

The plot was well paced and I was hooked the entire way through, though the story did start to drag near the end. The story was delightfully funny and entertaining and, though it did cross the line to silly at a few points, it kept a smile on my face. There was a surprise in store that I never saw coming, about one of the characters. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.

The Truth About Leo was a wonderful, light, and fun romance. I really liked this thoroughly entertaining read. From the sweet romance, to the surprising secret, and the endless fun, this book was lovely. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.
