Eclipse ADT Installation Procedure

1. Start Eclipse (L:\workspace as default workspace area) 2. Install ADT components in Eclipse

  • Help → Install New Software…
  • click “Add” button
  • enter “https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/” as Location, then OK
  • check Developer Tools box
  • click Next
  • click Next again
  • carefully read license agreements and accept them, then click finish when complete
  • a “Security Warning” will pop up warning of unsigned content; you need to click OK to complete the download/install
  • click Yes to restart Eclipse

3. Configure Android SDK components

  • accept Workspace location as L:\workspace when Eclipse starts
  • a warning about Android SDK location will pop up; click Close
  • a separate Welcome to Android Development/Configure SDK window should be open; change Target Location to “L:\android-sdks”
  • check the box for installing Android 2.2 if you want students to use Android 2.2; otherwise the latest API is checked by default
  • click Next
  • decide on sending usage stats to Google, then click Finish (optional)
  • carefully read license agreements and accept them, then click Install
  • Android SDK window will pop up; click on “Open SDK Manager” window
  • when Android SDK Manager window pops up, check boxes for the following items:
    1. Tools → Android SDK Build-tools for selected version of the Android SDK
    2. Android <version> → ARM EABI v7a System Image (if not already checked)
    3. Extras → Android Support Repository
    4. Extras → Google USB Driver
    5. Extras → Google Play services
  • click Install <#> packages
  • carefully read license agreements and accept them, then click Install
  • wait a long time (over 30 minutes)
  • close Android SDK Manager when it reports “Done loading packages” at the bottom of the window

4. Configure Android Virtual Device Manager

  • Window → Android Virtual Device Manager
  • in “Android Virtual Devices” tab, click Create…
  • create Android Virtual Device (provide a name and select parameters) (do not select x86 emulation for CPU/ABI)
  • close AVD Manager
  • click OK when done

5. Create application and start programming
