Transferring files from a remote machine to a cs machine via MyWebspace Author: K. Vanderhoff Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 Uploading files from a remote machine: ------------------------------------- Step one: Go to https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/. Log in using your MyUW NetID & password. Step two: Open your private directory by left-clicking on the name or folder icon. Step three: Create a new directory using the button at the top of the webpage. You can name this directory cs367. Click the 'ok' button. Step four: Left-click the name/folder icon of the new directory you created. You can create new directories within this folder to hold each of your projects in the same manner as described in step 3, just be sure to name them differently. Step five: Now, upload a file by selecting the Upload button at the top of the webpage. This will take you to a page that allows you to type in the path\name, or to browse for the file you wish to upload. I will describe the browse method, here. Step six: Click on the browse button to open a window to allow you to browse for the file to upload. (NOTE: Be sure you know where you saved your project files so that you can find them in the browse window!) Select a file to upload. Once the file is selected, the browser window closes and the file path\name is displayed in the box on the upload page. Always check the 'Overwrite file...' box if you are uploading a more current version than the one already on mywebspace. Press the 'ok' button to upload your file. You can upload more than one file at a time by changing the number in the drop-down box on the upload page. NOTE: You can only upload files, not folders, so be sure to make whatever directories you will need beforehand. Step seven: After uploading your files, you are returned to your directory. Make sure you open the files from your webspace to ensure they uploaded properly. Once you've finished uploading and verifying all your files, you can log out of MyWebspace and close your browser. Downloading files to a cs machine: --------------------------------- Step one: Open your internet browser (mozilla) and log into mywebspace, again. Then navigate back to your project folder. Step two: Once in your project directory, left-click on a file you want to download. This opens a window asking you to select a program to open the file, or to save the file to disk. Select save to disk. This opens the save file dialog. Select a folder in which to save your program files and press the save button. (You can create the directory before-hand by following the mkdir directions in the Unix tutorial.) Step three: When you save your file, you will notice that an empty browser window has opened. You can close this window using the close window command under the [-] button. Be careful not to quit until you're done downloading your files and have logged out. Repeat step 2 to download the rest of your files. Step four: Once you've finished downloading all your files, you can quit the mozilla browser and use your xterm window to copy them from the folder you saved them to into your hand-in folder, as specified in the assignment instructions. NOTE: If you use the check-boxes and the download button instead of left-clicking the files you want to download, it will combine the selected files into one zip file and then download the Private.zip file to your computer. While this may be convenient if you were saving them to CD, or if you had a slow dial-up connection, it isn't particularly helpful when you're trying to turn them in at the cs.
