Swanirwar was founded in 1989 by Dr Sujit Sinha, a Princeton graduate, as a voluntary organization for the benefit of the poor in the rural villages of Bengal, India. The project runs three schools near Andharmanik village in West Bengal and reaches out to a population of about 6000 people. Every school is attended by around 100 students in classes I through III. Apart from imparting primary education, Swanirwar also addresses other problems faced by the villagers that are related to healthcare, sanitation and agriculture. It employs an integrated approach to bring about socio-economic development in the region. In 1998, Asha-Madison, with the support of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin sent $1500 to the project. Peace Corps have extended their support for the project by contributing $1000 for the year 1999.
