Slum yesterday - new residential building now

Tran Quoc Thao Residential Block worth VND27
billion was officially put into use on April 23 in Ward 9,
District 3, HCMC. The residential block is located on an
area of 6,000 square meters along Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal
which used to be a slum area and was cleared in 1994. 

ADB funds water plant upgrading project

The Project Management Unit of the HCMC Water
Supply Company has begun to invite tenders for supply of
equipment for the Hoc Mon Water Plant upgrading project. 

Daewoo, Posco eye steel plant in Quang Ninh

Experts from two South Korean conglomerates -
Daewoo and Posco, have arrived in Vietnam to survey a
location for the country's proposed biggest steel plant in
the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Mr. Pham Chi Cuong, vice director general of the Vietnam
Steel Corporation, said these experts will conduct a site
survey in Cam Pha District next week to collect necessary
data for the construction of the plant. 

Daewoo and Posco have also proposed
building a power plant to address the electricity needs of
the future steel plant, which may require total investment
capital of US$1 billion. 

Thanh Nien newspaper organizes Youth Football Cup '97

The Youth Football Cup '97 will be held from
May 30 to June 12 this year in Hanoi sponsored by Thanh
Nien newspaper. According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Khe,
editor-in-chief of Thanh Nien newspaper, the championship
aims to promote the interest of young people in football,
and to discover and train talented young players to
prepare for the national Olympic football team. It also
aims at raising the pride of young people and serving the
cultural and spiritual life of the general public, Mr. Khe
added. The Youth Football Cup '97 attracts the
participation of eight teams including Hanoi,  Military,
HCMC, Gia Lai, Nghe An, Dong Thap and Binh Duong.
