POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP. We seek a recent Ph.D. to join an international
research team investigating evolutionary variation in thermal tolerance and
heat-shock protein expression among and within natural populations of
Drosophila in Israel. This is a multidisciplinary investigation including
field (dye-marking and recapture studies of wild Drosophila, measurements of
larval microclimates) and laboratory (quantitative Hsp measurements by
ELISA, thermotolerance determinations, PCR, sequencing, QTL mapping,
gel-shift assays) components, and supported by a 3-year grant from the
Binational Science Foundation of Israel and USA. The ideal candidate will
have expertise in as many of the above techniques as possible, be willing to
learn the remainder, and be fluent in English. Research will be conducted
in the laboratories of Abraham Korol (Institute of Evolution, University of
Haifa, Israel), Martin Feder (University of Chicago, USA), and in "Evolution
Canyon" (Lower Nahal Orem, Israel) with Korol, Feder, and Jerry Coyne
(University of Chicago, USA). The postdoctoral fellow will travel between
Israel and Chicago, spending portions of the year in each, and be supervised
jointly by Korol and Feder. Initial appointment for 1 year; potentially
renewable for 2 additional years. Starting annual salary approximately
US$17,000. Start date: February 2000 or as negotiated. Appointment will
be administered through the University of Haifa, Israel. To apply, email or
mail curriculum vitae, description of technical expertise, and
names/addresses/phone #/email addresses for 3 references to BOTH:
Dr. Abraham Korol, Professor, Institute of Evolution, The University
of Haifa, Mount Carmel, Haifa 31905 Israel; E-Mail: korol@esti.haifa.ac.il
Dr. Martin E. Feder, Professor, Department of Organismal Biology &
Anatomy, The University of Chicago, 1027 East 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637
USA; E-Mail: m-feder@uchicago.edu
Review of applications will commence 1 October 1999 and continue until the
position is filled.
