NA chairman gives VND 15 million to people in the
               flood-ridden areas

(VET)- Chairman of the National Assembly Nong Duc
Manh visited Lam Dong Province in
central Vietnam and had a working session with the
local authority between August 19
and August 22. He spent most of his time visiting two
districts, Cat Tien and Da Teh^Ò- the
most seriously effected areas by the flood, and he
granted VND 15 million of his own
money to the people in the areas. At the same time he
instructed the local authority to
help the people overcome the consequences from the
flood.

Hanoi needs VND 4,000 billion for its power grid

(VET)- It is reported that it would cost Hanoi around
VND 4,000 billion or equivalent to
US$ 285 million for the repair and upgrading of its
electric grid system, where as the
capital allocated from the state budget for the city as
of
July could afford to pay 30.6
percent of the cost, plus only 23 percent from the
capital already disbursed from the
foreign aid. Therefore Hanoi authority will have to
seek financial support from other
               sources for the project.

Export values of agro and forest items: US$ 86.80
               million in July

(VET)- According to the Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Development MARD the export
values of agro- and forest items in July rose 69.15
percent over the July 1998 to US$
86.808 million, raising the total export values of these

items in the seven months of the
year to US$ 581.188 million. Five items that have the
highest growth included fresh fruit,
vegetables, rubber, woods, tea and rice.

Car sales rose 6.4 percent in the first 7 months

(VET)- 3344 cars were sold out in the first 7 seven
months or an increase of 6.4 percent
over the same period last year. However 11 car
makers in Vietnam could only sell 5,200
cars in 1998 compared with 6,000 cars in 1997 and
8,000 units in 1996, while the total
capacity of these 11 car makers is 1600,000 cars /
year.

Foreigners can now transit at Da Nang International
               Airport

(VET)- According to the Consulate Department at the
Foreign Ministry, from August 19
               the Vietnamese Representations overseas are
authorized to issue the entry visas for
foreigners and the Vietnamese overseas to Da Nang
International Airport. And with this
decision passengers now can enter directly into
Vietnam through one of the three
international airports - Noi Bai in the capital city of
Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat of HCMC and Da
               Nang airport.

Yen Bai's Limestone processing plant inaugurated

(VET)- The limestone's processing plant based in the
mountainous and northern province
of Yen Bai was officially inaugurated last week. The
project is a joint venture between the
Yen Bai Mineral Resources Co. and Ban Pu Company
of Thailand with the total capital of
US$ 6 million. The project is expected to produce
15,000 tons of limestone powder and
100,000 tons of limestone grain a year for export.

Stake portions in a key gas project agreed upon

(VET)- An official with the state-run oil and gas
corporation or known as PetroVietnam
disclosed that his company will hold 51 percent of the
total stakes in a US$400-million
Nam Con Son gas pipeline JV project after reaching an
agreement with foreign partners
last week, and the foreign partners with BP/Statoil
venture holding the largest interests.
Previously Petrovietnam held only a 37 percent of the
stakes, while foreign partners
Mobil, BHP, BP/ Statoil and Tomen held the rest.
After BHP of Australia and Mobil of the
U.S. walked out of this venture, PetroVietnam
suggested that they would replace them to
increase its stake. Initially the foreign partners
disagreed, but finally an agreement was
reached. The 390km pipeline is capable of carrying
five to six billion cubic meters of gas.
In the initial phase it will transport gas from the Lan
Tay and Lan Do fields, and after that
from Rong Doi Tay and Hai Thach fields, among
others. To realize the project
PetroVietnam has obtained a syndicated loan of
US$100 million from four State-run
banks and a 55 million Euro loan from the European
Investment Bank.

More orders for Biti's shoes from American market

(VET)- Lam Kim Son, deputy head of the Business
Export Department of HCMC based
footwear company Biti's was quoted by SGT as saying
that his company has signed two
contracts worth a total US$ 140,000 to supply
footwear to a US customer and another
from Mexico. The orders were placed after the
company attended the Footwear
Exhibition Fair in Las Vegas early this month, in which
the company also received more
orders from its five U. S. regular customers and set up
relations with a number of South
American companies, which are interested in Biti's
products. Son said Biti's sent two
million pairs of shoes and sandals worth US$5 million
abroad in the first seven months of
the year, including 60,000 pairs valued at nearly
US$300,000 to the US alone. The
company plans to export 120,000 pairs of shoes and
sandals and sell US$500,000 worth
of products to the U.S. this year.

A US -VN trade deal will help boost US investment in
VN

(VET)- Geoffrey Jackson, the regional director for
Asia-Pacific of the U. S. Trade and
Development Agency (TDA) said during a three-day
visit to Vietnam that business activity
of American firms in Vietnam will recover and grow
after a bilateral trade agreement is
signed. He said his visit was aimed to survey TDA -
funded projects in this country, study
some environmental undertakings and identify some
fresh ventures of US investors in
telecoms and transport. SGT reported that over the last
two years, TDA has funded
several projects in Vietnam, yet some of them have
failed. Geoffrey Jackson said
American firms have set up offices in the country, but
the business slowdown has forced
them to withdraw. But with signing of a trade
agreement with Vietnam, they will come
back. He said TDA had recently received some new
appeals for support from American
investors as well as Vietnamese firms to do business
in the country.

the supply of consulting services to develop telecom
networks in rural areas of 10 Central
Provinces. Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang
Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien - Hue, Quang
Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces
will be the beneficiaries from this
project. The project will include installing 120,000
switching lines, 1,800 kilometers of
optic cables and 450,000 kilometers of copper cables,
among other facilities. The cost for
the project is estimated at US$105 million, US$85
million of which will be provided by the
Japan's Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund OECF,
and the rest will come from VNPT.
The project is expected to be completed by the year
2002.

(VET)- Eleven people were reported killed and three
others seriously injured when a bus
collided with a truck in the central province of Ninh

traffic Police Department 444 people
were killed in traffic accidents in Vietnam in the first

half of the year, or an increase of

stepping up the equitisation of
State-owned enterprises (SOE) in the city.

next few years.

HCM City police arrest Californian Interpol suspects

(VNS)- HCM City police have arrested young
Vietnamese-American wanted by Interpol for his alleged
involvement in attempted murder in California two
years ago.

Phan Huy Doan, 28, was arrested last Saturday in a
house he rents with a woman at 79B Le Thai To Street,
District 3, said a senior officer from the Hanoi based
Interpol Vietnam.

He told Vietnam News yesterday that Doan would be
deported from Vietnam and handed over to Interpol in
Washington sometime next week, saying that the
detention of a suspect wanted by Interpol was limited to nine
                days.

The Interpol Vietnam officer said Doan allegedly shot
a young man called Yee, and robbed him of all his money in
front of his house in San Jose after the victim refused

to give him money on a night in June 1997.

Yee, who had just returned home from a gambling
club, survived the repeated shots and described the attacker
when police arrived. US Police identified Phan Huy
Doan as the attacker.

According to US Police documents, Doan had a
previous criminal record and had been put on the list of wanted
serious criminals, with the US Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) issuing a warrant for Doan's arrest.

                But he had disappeared.

Doan informed arresting Vietnamese police this week
that he had visited Vietnam a number of times - the latest
arrival being in August last year.

                Disco brawl

He said he lived in HCM City whenever visiting
Vietnam, even though his native town was Nha Trang.

Tran Van Nam, an officer of the police task force,
revealed that Doan frequented discotheques while in HCM City,
and had 'close relations' with people involved in
criminal activity both abroad and in HCM City.

Doan is also suspected of being involved in a
gang-organised brawl at HCM City's Monaco discotheque on
June
                23 this year.

Vietnam joined Interpol as the 156th member in
November 1991, and has signed juridical co-operation
agreements with seven member countries, but not with
the United States.

Each year it receives about 500 requests for
clarification and 800 orders for international tracking of
criminals,
particularly those Viet Kieu (Overseas Vietnamese)
living in America, Canada, Australia and Germany. So far
Interpol Vietnam has submitted 400 written responses,
300 of them relating to domestic cases.
